A neighbor asked us if we wanted a strawberry pot – a ceramic pot that you fill with dirt and plant strawberries in the 8 or 10 holes on the sides and in the top.
We took it and just put it in the upper part of our vegetable plot that gets little sun. The existing strawberry plants did not like being confined to the pot, so they began sending out sprouts and soon took hold in the garden,
They are now well established in the top ten or twelve feet of the garden and are loving life., Last year, I decided to enjoy a few of the fresh, ripe berries and put a net over the plot as well as scattering some anti-chipmunk chemicals. I picked some wonderful berries and enjoyed them on my cereal. This year, I have devoted the entire plot to my newfound friend – Mr. Mockingbird, who has marked off my yard as his territory. He somehow squeezes through the wire, and carefully plucks the strawberries just as they ripen.
This year, the strawberries belong to him. As for next year? We’ll see.
