Our community grocery store, Reid’s Super Save, is making a great comeback. Struggling a month or so ago with spiraling labor, and product costs, Reid’s cut back their stock on canned goods and certain items and continued to concentrate on their specialty – quality meats and produce products, and they are recovering nicely as the Charlottesville community responds.
Though it’s on the other side of town, I find myself on Preston Avenue every Tuesday and make a point to stop in.
Recently, I picked up a pound of their in-house and freshly-ground sausage and it was fantastic. Less than $ 4 a pound, the sausage is almost entirely pure pork, fresh from their trimmings and seasoned (I like mild) perfectly. I bought some chicken thighs as well. They were trimmed nicely and from young, tender birds, not fatty hens. I fried them and they were sensational. I also bought enough pears for Nancy to can. The pears were picture-perfect and worthy of an oil painting. The pear jam turned out well, too.
Slowly but surely the shelves at Reid’s are filling back up as folks rediscover Charlottesville’s favorite grocery store.
