Chicken lovers, take notice. According to my friend, Sherman Shifflett, a new restaurant in Gordonsville is turning out dynamite fried chicken.
Here is his recent account.
“Ava and I were in Louisa, and we were looking for a place to eat. Many of the places were closed, while others only had orders to go, and we were tired of fast food.
We decided to try a place called Champion Ice House in Gordonsville, about 15 miles away. It’s a fairly new restaurant and specializes in chicken.
The chicken was fantastic, better than Michie Tavern, in my opinion. The reason it’s so good is they fry it with lard, like Mom (probably your mom too) used to do.
We ordered Deviled Eggs as appetizers, and they were very good. I ordered the White Meat Platter with a breast, wing, a roll and two sides – mashed potatoes and slaw. The potatoes and slaw were good, but the chicken was excellent. Ava Ordered a Grilled Chicken Salad and it was also delicious. The platter was just $12.
For dessert, I ordered the Sweet Potato Pie – very good.
The menu has several options including boats, platters, family meals, salads, and of course, desserts. The restaurant is spacious. They have a bar and a patio, and the wait staff is both friendly and attentive. They wear shirts with this caption on the back: Cold Beer, Hot Chicken, Good Friends. And their chicken is flat out good.
If you go, the restaurant is on the main drag into town, headed west. Go under the RR bridge and the restaurant is on the right with parking in the rear. They are closed on Monday’s and Tuesday’s.
The address is 212 N. Main St., Gordonsville. Call them at 540-406-5393.
