A male bluebird lit on our window feeder recently and he was simply stunning. There is no blue on the finest artist’s pallet that could begin to duplicate his color. This is the time of year when birds strut their stuff. An early spring molt leads to spectacular colors which male birds use to attract females. The feathers don’t change colors, but new, brighter feathers take their place.
Even the little male house finches sport red colorings like never before, as do cardinals. They are now redder than red.
One of the most spectacular in color changes is that of the vivid yellow, male gold finches, and they are just beginning to show in our yard.
They are now here in their patchwork-yellow costumes, soon to be a spectacular gold.
But for now, we watch in amazement as our male bluebird displays his magnificent blue feathers. Nesting will begin soon.
