I’ve said this before, but the two smartest bird varieties of birds to visit my yard are the crows and the blue jays. My crows have become regular visitors, usually 3 but occasionally 5. They eat most anything they can find but are especially fond of pieces of stale bread I sometimes scatter. Typically, a crow will pick up a piece of bread, fly to the bird bath and dunk the bread as … [Read more...]
Winter Opportunities: Nags Head Stripers
This is the time of year outdoor writers despise. That’s because not much is happening out there but icicles clinging to the bridge pilings. And what is happening is the same-old, same-old. Skates and sharks in the Outer Banks surf, a few speckled trout caught in the Elizabeth River and a big bass or two landed at Lake Anna. Crappie are deeper than a western Pennsylvania coal mine, and though … [Read more...]
Do Your Best
What Boomer can ever forget that first uniform of his or her youth, likely from being a member of a Cub Scout or Brownie troop. I clearly recall that royal blue shirt with the bright yellow kerchief, my Cub Scout uniform in 5th grade. As a new scout recruit, I was fascinated by the badges and emblems, and I wanted as many as I could pin or have Mom sew on my uniform. They didn’t cost … [Read more...]
No-Crust Mexican Quiche
More and more, I am developing a taste for Mexican food. Of course, what I consider Mexican is probably totally unlike what actual Mexicans eat and enjoy. My choices are more like Tex-Mex or Redneck -Mex. But I like Tacos, I like Burritos and I enjoyed this version of no-crust Mexican Quiche. Here’s how I put mine together. First, anytime you use eggs, cream, and cheese together, it’s going … [Read more...]
Woodpeckers: Skilled and Beautiful
Try this sometime. Climb out in a tree limb, put a seed in your mouth and open it with only your mouth and teeth, spitting out the husk eating just the seed and you can’t use your hands. That’s pretty much what many birds do every day. It almost makes hitting a 95-mile per hour baseball look easy. Almost. It’s fun to watch my backyard birds at the sunflower feeder where they munch … [Read more...]
Sakura Japanese Restaurant: Fun but Pricey
A group of us decided to bring in the New Year with a visit to Sakura Japanese Steak and Seafood house in the Hollymead Shopping Center. It was a fun experience, but pricey. Then again, almost all restaurants have achieved the “pricey†tag since Covid and Biden-omics combined to leave their mark. I have eaten at a number of Japanese steak houses, and they are pretty much all alike … [Read more...]
The Transfer Portal
The transfer portal. I wish I had never heard those words – likely to be the demise of college athletics as we once knew and loved. The transfer portal means an athlete has no allegiance to the college that accepted him and gave him a four-year scholarship, plus a stipend to play there. Now, if a wide receiver at State University doesn’t think the quarterback threw his way often enough, he … [Read more...]
My Space.com
“And do you, Jim, promise to have and hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, and do you promise to give up all your personal space for so long as you both shall live?†“I do.†And did I ever. While you gain a wonderful, lifetime partner in a marriage, you lose space. Your house or apartment is taken over completely. Walls where you would normally hang a mounted … [Read more...]

A Big Rockfish Invasion
The 2023 fishing season certainly closed out with a bang. As the season ended on Dec. 31, huge rockfish were plentiful at the High Rise and off Cape Charles. Luke Mooney (pictured above) landed one of the big “rocksâ€. Notice the large fish in its mouth – looks like a small Wahoo to me. Any ideas? The rockfish are still around but must be released. Giant bluefins … [Read more...]
