We stayed in a Air B&B cabin on the Greenbrier River last weekend. It was good to be back in my old stomping grounds of Lewisburg, WV and the river was as beautiful as ever. Funny, but on the way over, Nancy and I thought about Whip-poor-wills and wondered if we would be able to hear one again in these remote backwoods. Did we ever. The little fellow Whip-poor-will-ed his heart out. … [Read more...]
20 Calorie Bars
Ran across an amazing product recently, again from Aldi’s. I was poking around in their ice cream section looking for some “lite” bars or popsicles. I saw a box of Fit Active 20 Calorie Bars. 20 calories? That’s like one bite of steak. I figured they would be awful, but if we could enjoy a little something sweet after a meal and only spring for 20 calories, it was worth a try. Plus, … [Read more...]
It’s Game on in Nags Head
The water temperatures have hit the 60’s and it’s “Game On” at Nags Head. The sound has been delivering trout to 23-inches and red drum to 30-inches and lots of them, says Capt. Reese Stecher with beachbumfishing.com. “We’re also catching some nice bluefish from 2 to 6 pounds,” Reese said. The past three years have been phenomenal for trout and pups in the Roanoke Sound and this year … [Read more...]
The Boys of Summer
Carl Erskine died this week. Most people wouldn’t know who Carl Erskine was. But I did. He was one of the last Boys of Summer – a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers who graced Ebbets Field and pitched masterfully for “Da Bums of Flatbush”. I was about 8 when I became a Dodger fan. They were playing in the 1953 World Series and their shortstop was named Pee Wee Reese. I liked the name for some … [Read more...]
Mockingbird Visits
We have lots of mockingbirds in our neighborhood, but not usually in my yard – which is unusual since I have tons of other birds that visit. But more and more I am drawing mockingbirds to my feeders. As it tuns out, the friendly gray birds are quite fond of peanut logs and sunflower hearts. I have often written about a product named C & S Peanut Log, which I have been hanging instead of … [Read more...]
Beware of Gourmet Salted Peanuts
Went through a little place called Waverly not long ago. The peanut capitol of the world, or so they claimed. I had been dunking some bloodworms in the lower Chesapeake for croakers. Decided to come back the scenic route up Route 460 instead of fighting the US Navy getting off work on I-64 at Hampton. I loaded up on the croakers, by the way. Had a cooler full. So, it was back to Charlottesville … [Read more...]
Easy, Peasy Sausage Muffins
If it ain’t easy, don’t cook it. Life is too short and there are too many easy recipes that result in great food to worry over a complicated recipe. Breakfast muffins, for example. Breakfast muffins are simply ideal. They are easy to make, and the next morning you pop one in the microwave and in minutes you’re eating a total breakfast with one muffin. Last week, I made a few Sausage … [Read more...]
Cage-Free Tomatoes?
I have never liked tomato cages. Typically, the cages I have tried to erect in the past do quite well until the tomato vines grow larger and begin to hang heavy with fruit. Then, one day I go out to the garden and the cages are no longer erect but lying sideways on the ground. I have tried stakes, which do okay until the vines grow and fruit hangs heavy, then the tomato limbs flop down … [Read more...]

The Dogwoods are blooming, the water temp is hitting 60, it’s time for a little drumming. Black Drum are being caught along the shallow channel ledge running from Fisherman’s Island to north of Cape Charles. Good spots are Kiptopeake, the Cabbage Patch, the Concrete Ships, as well as the Highrise and 2nd & 3rd Islands of CBBT. Running tides, late afternoons and evenings and full moons are … [Read more...]

By Alex McCrickard/DWR Anglers living along the I-95 corridor can experience exceptional year-round fishing on Virginia’s tidal rivers.
