Virginia Saltwater Dr. Ken Neill, III Small rockfish are pretty much everywhere. More fish over 30 inches are being caught. Some of the better catches are being made in the York River, at the James River crossings and at the CBBT. Larger fish are on their way with fish to over 50 pounds being caught a bit to our north this week. A little more of the cooler weather will have more of … [Read more...]
South River Hotspot
The South River in Waynesboro has been a hotspot in spite of the cooling temperatures. Tommy Lawhorne at the South River Fly Shop said that the water levels were great (before the Thursday rain) and some big browns and ‘bows were coming to net. “”Fly fishermen with good nymphing skills have been doing very well,” Tommy acknowledged. “Brown caddis in a size 16 are still hatching and some blue … [Read more...]

An Unbelievable Deer Hunt
By Sherman T. Shifflett Friends: This is an unbelievable hunting story, and I am not making it up. Around 1970 I started deer hunting, mostly around Louisa County, VA, but I have deer hunted all around Central Virginia. During those 45 years, I've experienced many enjoyable moments, have seen a lot and could write a book. But, today (Thursday, November 5, 2015) takes … [Read more...]
Thanksgiving Leftovers
My Dad was a child of the Depression. As such, nothing went to waste in our house, especially food and especially at Thanksgiving. My earliest memories of Thanksgiving at our modest two-bedroom home in Beckley, West Virginia were of a huge roasted turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy (Daddy made amazing gravy), succotash, collards, cranberry sauce, home made yeast rolls and pumpkin pie … [Read more...]
Really Thin Crust Pizza
Sunday is often the night to chill out at the Brewer house. Many times we have entertained or have been entertained over the weekend and we want a simple, Sunday night meal. For Nancy and I, Sunday is a great night for pizza. But that presents a problem. Both of us are watching our weight and pizza is not a very accommodating dish when it comes to shedding calories. The opposite is true because … [Read more...]

More Nags Head Stripers
The stripers in the sound are still biting, says Capt. Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Guide Service, but the powers that be won’t report it. The thinking goes that if more anglers knew about the inshore bite, fewer would take the bluewater trips offshore. Regardless, CvilleBuzz is happy to report the good news and to urge anglers interested in catching a quick limit of stripers to head for the sounds … [Read more...]
Columns To Remember
I have been writing outdoor columns for over 30 years. I thought it would be fun to go back in the archives and print a few of the oldies. Below is the first in this series. Go Easy on the Scent Wafers It was my annual bow hunt in Bath County, an opportunity to fell a deer with a deadly shot to the heart. Trouble is, for the past couple seasons, my arrows have remained … [Read more...]
