A few years ago, I packed my surf rod, some heavy casting rods and reels, and a tackle box for a getaway to Nags Head and a little saltwater fishing. Unfortunately, I picked up the wrong tackle box. It was my freshwater box with nary a sinker or double drop rig in the whole box. I had to buy new stuff at the Beach. Last weekend, I did even worse. I brought my rods, a crab net and big bucket for … [Read more...]
Chick-fil-A Rules
All the other fast-food restaurants spend much of their time chasing after Chick-fil-A, a true innovator in the business and the Closed-On-Sundays chain has done it again with their Honey Pepper Pimento and Chicken Sandwiches. I had seen them advertised on TV, and being a lover of anything with pimento cheese, I had to try them. I did and they were as advertised – delicious. I ordered the mild … [Read more...]
Swords: The Other Billfish
Blue marlin, white marlin sailfish – billfish, one and all. But so are swordfish, and unlike their long snouted cousins, they are prized as food fish. Swordfish anglers fish in deep water to attract their quarry and often take overnight trips to reach them. This past week, the “Reelin N Dealin” put a 326-lb. swordfish on the scales and claimed first prize in the Oceans East Swordfish … [Read more...]
Old Charlottesville Businesses: The Caravan
Back in the late 60’s, the area along 29 north of the Hydraulic Intersection was largely rural. There was a cattle farm behind what was once K-Mart and hayfields extended north. Then, 29 began to develop. I can recall – the early 70’s as I remember – when the Caravan Restaurant opened beside what was the R.M. Davis car lot. There weren’t that many fast-food joints back then – we didn’t even … [Read more...]
A November World Series?
This year, the World Series is likely to extend into November, but for sure through October 30. It’s almost Halloween and that’s scary. Baseball should be over in early October, but money rules, especially with TV advertising. But who’s watching? The games don’t start until 9 and they often run through midnight. Even most bars close then. I love the Dodgers, but I’ll watch a few innings … [Read more...]
Toys of My Life: The Gyroscope
Back in the 50’s, one of the staple toys in a kid’s arsenal was a gyroscope. The little round balls of metal wire could do amazing things. None of us knew how they worked, but if you pulled a string and sent the toy spinning round and round, it would dance on the floor for long periods. You could even position it on top of a pencil, and it wouldn’t fall off. There were numerous tricks you … [Read more...]
Cash Crops
Being a backyard gardener is generally not rewarding – financially speaking. Each spring I spend hundreds of dollars on seeds, plants, fertilizer, fencing, insecticides, and the like to get about $10 worth of tomatoes. But this year, I did okay. I planted 4 rows of peas and they produced nicely, even though you can buy frozen peas for a pittance, but these were extra sweet and good. I also got a … [Read more...]
Big Ol’ Sea Mullet
They are called whiting if you catch one in the Bay. In the ocean, many call them sea mullet. No matter the name, they are spectacular eating, and they are biting like it’s their last meal at Nags Head. Some big ‘uns, too. TW’s Tackle weighed in lots of oversized sea mullet this week, as anglers were catching them in the surf and from the piers. They typically bite well into chilly … [Read more...]
Asheville’s Best Hot Dog
By: William Horton William Richard (Dick) Bennett was a “salt of the earth” kind of guy. He was hard working, thrifty, honest, and moral. He loved his family and was a respected member of the West Asheville community and treated all those who he encountered with respect and dignity no matter their station in life. As a Freemason, he believed in meeting with others “on the … [Read more...]
World’s Best Hot Dog Chili
By William Horton This approximates the recipe that Bennett’s Drug Store used for Asheville’s best hot dog of the 50’s and 60’s. For the hot dog I like to use Nathan’s or Ball Park Beef Franks. I boil them in Guinness Draft. There’s no reason why you can’t use them on any kind you like whether steamed, boiled, or grilled. I like mine with mustard chili and onion on a steamed or … [Read more...]
