Music without words. Is that possible anymore? Today’s music consists mainly of light rock, heavy metal, and rap. It would be hard to do rat-a-tat rap music without words like “Ho’s in the hood” or rock music without a pounding beat and an echo chamber for the soloist. But Boomers remember when there was great music, and no words whatsoever. We called them “Instrumentals.” Remember … [Read more...]
A Pair of Downy’s
I have been seeing a pair of Downy Woodpeckers at my various feeders recently. They particularly like the peanut suet bar. One Downy with a cherry red patch on the back of his head (the male) will peck on one side and one without the red patch (the female) will peck at the other. Obviously, I have had a mating pair of Downy’s, and they will no doubt soon be nesting near or on my … [Read more...]

Baking Beer Bread
Baking bread is not among my culinary fortes. But then, neither is cooking meats, vegetables, or desserts, but that doesn’t stop me from tying on my apron and trying. Recently, I saw a recipe for Beer Bread. Beer? Bread? Two of my faves - so I decided to give it a go. Not only was it easy, it was delicious – rich, yummy and filling. From start to finish, it’s about an hour and 15 … [Read more...]
Leg Quarters
Eggs have gotten so expensive that Kroger’s had to install an ATM machine beside the Dairy and Egg department. Some shoppers put a carton of eggs on layaway and pay for them over time. But the price of chicken hasn’t risen to such astronomical heights – yet. Chicken wings are and remain ridiculously priced, because of high demand for Buffalo Wings (especially near Super Bowl time), but … [Read more...]
Lenten Rose in Bloom
On Feb. 1 our Lenten Rose patch was in bloom. What a beautiful, wonderful plant. Several years ago, Nancy was trying to figure out what to do with the root-studded and mostly shady space beneath our old maple tree in the back yard. She planted a few hostas and they did well, but she wanted some color and could find few colorful plants that could bloom without a lot of sun. My son, … [Read more...]
Catching Trophy Yellow Perch
By Peter Brookes When February rolls around, most anglers have had about as much of being stuck indoors and away from their favorite fishing hole as they can stand. “Cabin fever” among anglers ranks right up there with the flu as an unwelcome winter illness. This year’s bone-chilling polar vortex only made it worse. But letting cabin fever get to you isn’t the answer. Instead, put on your … [Read more...]
A Foul Call
It was December 1972 and my close friend, Joe Davis, wanted me to join him as a referee for Little League basketball games. “We’ll call two games back-to-back, twice a week, and we can make $6 a game,” he offered, temptingly. While $24 a week wasn’t Warren Buffet money, it would be twenty-some bucks that I didn’t have before, and I could spend it any way I liked. Fishing equipment, golf … [Read more...]

Two All-Beef Patties…
Need I say more? We’re talking Big Macs here, the most famous sandwich ever created, not only in America but around the world. The Big Mac came into being in 1967 when one of the Ray Kroc’s franchise owners in Pittsburg added the 45-cent sandwich to his menu. The name was subsequently created by Ester Rose, a 21-year-old ad secretary who worked in the corporate office. In a brilliant … [Read more...]
