Striper season is in full swing and lots of slot sized fish are being caught in tidal rivers around docks, on shaded shorelines, and on deeper structure. Croaker catches are steadily improving in the James and other tidal rivers, but sizes remain on the smaller size. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is beginning to produce sheepshead, black drum, and red drum around the pilings. Flounder are gradually making their way into the Bay and catches have been good near the CBBT. Blue fishing is excellent, with some Big Mamas coming in over the rails. Cobia are nosing their way into Virginia waters and Spanish Macs are also making a showing. This appears to be a great year for sheepshead – some huge fish are being caught on fiddler crabs, cut blue crabs and sand fleas.
OBX
Storms and rough waters plagued Memorial Day fishing parties on the Outer Banks. Bluefish – which actually enjoy a rough surf – were biting fresh cut bait for those who braved the winds and seas. Pier fishermen largely stayed home. Offshore excursions produced yellowfin, sea bass, tilefish and Maahi. Boats in the sound were catching speckled trout, red drum, and a few sheepshead. Great weather this weekend should brighten prospects.
Freshwater
Lots of rain this week has improved water levels around the state. Smallmouth fishing has picked up significantly. Bass and crappie are now spreading out in lakes and reservoirs. The tidal rivers are hotspots for bass, Grass frogs are getting the job done. Bluegills and shellcrackers are now bedding and go for most anything thrown their way.
