If you’re headed to the OBX this Memorial Day weekend – or anytime soon for that matter – you can expect to catch some nice bluefish from the piers. The sleek predators are hitting Gotcha plugs and most anything else that gets in their way. It looks to be another excellent year for catching bluefish all the way from Hatteras to the upper reaches of the Chesapeake Bay. Pier jockeys at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head were also reeling in some big sheepshead along with sea mullet and a few puppy drum. Nearshore charters are finding Spanish, blues, amberjacks and sea bass. The blue water fleet is catching Wahoo, tilefish, tuna and sea bass. The surf temperature is now 63 degrees and things are starting to happen.
Chesapeake Bay
Croakers are spreading out throughout the Bay, now, and the sizes are increasing. Bloodworms, shrimp and squid are the preferred baits. Back drum, sheepshead, and big red drum are being caught action bridges, tunnels, and shallow grass flats throughout the Virginia Beach and Norfolk region. Hot action on some slammer bluefish – some in the 30-inch category – continues.
