Nothing says comfort food like hamburger steaks, especially with an onion gravy. After 3 or 4 straight meals of chicken, a juicy burger patty tastes mighty good. I made a batch last night and it passed the “Nancy test” with flying colors. She took the leftovers with her to work the next day.
There are a million ways to make hamburger steaks, but here’s my method.
First, I went with a lean hamburger (93/7). I didn’t wasn’t a bunch of grease in my eventual gravy. For the hamburger steaks, I used a pound of burger, 1 egg, 1/2 C panko crumbs, 1 T onion flakes, 1 t onion powder, 1 t garlic powder and salt and pepper. I formed the mixture into three patties, careful not to over press them I put about a tablespoon of olive oil in a pan and cooked the patties until they were almost done, still pink inside, and removed them to another plate. To the drippings, I added 2 T of butter and sauteed 1 small, sliced onions until tender. I then added 1 pkg. Brown Gravy and Onion mix to a cup of cold water and let that simmer for about 10 minutes in the pan. When the gravy had reduced a bit, I added the burger patties back to the pan and flipped them several times to cook through. This dish absolutely requires mashed potatoes, and I plated the hamburger steaks and smothered them and the potatoes with the delicious (and easy) onion gravy.
When it comes to comfort food, this is hard to beat.
