Rockfish Beginning to Stir

November 3, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Warm weather has kept the rockfish bite from exploding. The big stripers like the water colder, low 50’s, for example. However, rockfish are still being caught within the small inlets, but are moving out towards the mouths of the inlets, along the main river. On the Rappahannock River, boats are picking up fish by trolling and jigging. Tandem rigs with 4- to 6-inch baits are taking … [Read more...]

Drum On the  OBX

October 27, 2022 by Jim Brewer

If you are fortunate enough to have planned a fall escape to the Outer Banks, your timing could hardly be better. The fishing has been sensational. The big red drum that have abandoned northern waters are feeding along the OBX coast and surf fishermen and pier fishermen are both taking advantage. Pier fishing has been good the past couple of days with a handful of big drum pulled … [Read more...]

Trout Stocking Underway

October 20, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The hatchery trucks are on the move. Though streams are a bit low, trout will soon find their way from the hatchery raceways to the gurgling currents of mountain brooks. Let the fall trout fishing begin. Virginia contains over 3,500 miles of trout streams, in addition to numerous ponds, small lakes and reservoirs. The total includes over 2,900 miles of wild trout streams and about 600 … [Read more...]

Speckled Trout Are Everywhere

October 13, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Speckled trout are beginning to pop up everywhere in Virginia waters – from the bay inlets to the oceanfront. The piers around Hampton and Virginia Beach are also reporting nice catches. Puppy drum, too. The specks are going for live bait, like shrimp and spot as well as Mir-o-lures, jigs and topwater baits. Spot are abundant now, moving into inlets and cruising the river bottoms. … [Read more...]

A 10-5 Flounder

October 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The flounder bite has been good. Ask Ty Martz. He drifted along the CBBT and picked up a 10-5 flatfish.  That’s a lot of flounder filets. The CBBT is also good place for red drum. Drum of all sizes are showing up in the surf along the Oceanfront to Sandbidge. Large spot are now on the move, netters are catching plenty inside the first island.  Speckled trout are attacking baits inside … [Read more...]

Hurricane Season Fishing

September 28, 2022 by Jim Brewer

They say the best time to catch fish in saltwater is the day before and the day after a big storm. The low pressure triggers the early bite, and the aftermath of the storm churns up the ocean bottom and the bait. As Hurricane Ian passes though, it will put a big damper on fishing prospects, but by late weekend, the bite should be back on. In the Bay, it’s spot, Spanish, ribbonfish and … [Read more...]

It’s Spot On

September 22, 2022 by Jim Brewer

It happens every September. The huge numbers of spot that have moved from the ocean to the Bay waters begin to bite…and bite… and bite. Two at a time. Half-pounders. A cooler-full on a single tide change. And it’s happening right now. The two hot spots have been the Hampton/Norfolk area and the hard bottom grounds of the lower Rappahannock. The feisty panfish will soon be on the move … [Read more...]

Cobia Season Ended

September 15, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The Virginia cobia season ended on Sept. 15, but it has been another good one. The past 4 years, in fact, have been very good. From now on, it’s catch and release and there are still plenty of nice fish around – from the mouth of the bay to the mouth of the Rappahannock. Big red drum are still pulling line off Penn reels, especially the lower Bay. Lots of puppy drum have been active at … [Read more...]

Big Flounder Time

September 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Can you believe it’s September? Where did the summer go? September means back to school, back to work and back to catching flounder. Big flounder. Now is when the big fellas bite. A 9-pounder was weighed this week along with several in the 6-pound category. Live spot is the bait of choice for big flatfish. The end of cobia season is approaching but they are still in the bay and will hit … [Read more...]

Blues and Ribbons

September 1, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Not blue ribbons, but bluefish and ribbonfish – plus lots of   Spanish Macs. That’s what they’re catching off Virginia Beach and up into the Bay. The charter boats are loading up. Flounder catches have also been excellent along the coast and throughout the lower bay - around the CBBT pilons, near the rocks that cover the tunnels and around coastal reefs and wrecks. Brian Hostetter … [Read more...]
