March 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

BY DWR Celebrate trout fishing with friends and family on Trout Heritage Day! Some may find this day reminiscent of a traditional opening day of the trout season. DWR fisheries staff stock select waters on the first Saturday of April to create an announced stocking event and give anglers the feel of an opening day. Occoquan River Shad

March 16, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Peter Brookes The end of winter and the arrival of spring means many things to many people, but to Virginia’s tidal river anglers it means primarily one thing: The shad are coming! Yes, America’s "founding fish" is coming soon to a Virginia tidal river near you. Anyone who follows the annual shad run in the Old Dominion is aware of the famous fishing opportunities on the James … [Read more...]

Royalton White Sands: Wasted Caribbean Beauty

March 9, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Nancy and I had a wonderful time during our short stay in Jamaica – despite our hotel, the Royalton White Sands. It was post-card beautiful but lacking in integrity and quality. The hotel advertises ocean front rooms and that was critical for us. We specifically stated that we wanted a room with a view of the Caribbean. We didn’t get what we asked for. There were perhaps only 3 or 4 rooms out … [Read more...]

Super Duper Sea Bass

March 1, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The early winter sea bass season has been nothing less than sensational. When weather allows, boats are returning with limits on each trip – and nice bass at that. Tautog are plentiful on nearshore ocean wrecks and reefs. Their feeding activity is based on water temperature. When the water is above 44 degrees, they should be available. Now that Bay water has hit 50 degrees look for the bite to … [Read more...]

Sharks Aplenty

February 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Sharks don’t mind the cold saltwater, now in the lower to mid-fifties, so if you have ever wanted to catch a few, now’s a good time. There have been numerous shark catches at Hatteras and lots of dogfish reported on the Nags Head beaches. The warm weather this week has improved surf fishing with some nice red drum reported. Puppy Drum, Black Drum and a few Blow Toads are also biting … [Read more...]

Landing A Golden Bass

February 16, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Molly Kirk/DWR   Jacob Moore was quite surprised when he reeled in this largemouth bass from the James River. Moore was expecting to catch a largemouth—he was targeting them. But he wasn’t expecting to catch a golden largemouth! “I was out there practicing for a tournament, catching a bunch of fish,” said Moore, who works as an arborist and participates in local tournaments. “I … [Read more...]

Catching Trophy Yellow Perch

February 9, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Peter Brookes When February rolls around, most anglers have had about as much of being stuck indoors and away from their favorite fishing hole as they can stand. “Cabin fever” among anglers ranks right up there with the flu as an unwelcome winter illness. This year’s bone-chilling polar vortex only made it worse. But letting cabin fever get to you isn’t the answer. Instead, put on your … [Read more...]

Tog’ Time

February 2, 2023 by Jim Brewer

It’s time to catch a few togs’. Tautogs, the fish. They don’t mind the cold weather if you don’t. They put up a decent fight, and they are good to eat. Some big tautogs are now being caught on the ocean wrecks.  Dr. Ken Neill successfully fished the triangle wrecks with Johnny Boyd over the weekend. They kept a few big ones and tagged and released the rest. Four already had tags in … [Read more...]

Tuna and Walleye

January 26, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Doing outdoor reports this year is like handing out “Frying With Lard” brochures at a Weight Watcher’s Convention. It’s pretty slim pickings out there. The giant bluefin tuna re still frolicking off the Outer Banks and walleye are gearing up to spawn in freshwater. In the Bay, some huge rockfish remain, though it’s catch and release until June. Small stripers and specks are hitting in … [Read more...]

All Quiet on the Bay Front

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

It’s pretty quiet out there on the Chesapeake Bay. Lots of fish have migrated into the ocean, but they’ll return when the spring sun warms things up. In the meantime, most of what little fishing is being done is for catch and release rock-fishing. Live eels are working best for the big fellas, lots in the 40pound class. Tautogs are biting – it seems they always bite. But not many are … [Read more...]
