      The 2023 fishing season certainly closed out with a bang. As the season ended on Dec. 31, huge rockfish were plentiful at the High Rise and off Cape Charles.   Often colder water heats up freshwater fishing, especially at Lake Anna, when the big bass bite begins as the water temperature goes south of 50. The striper bite is better, as well. From the Potomac River to Oregon Inlet, the word on the saltwater streets is “stripers”. The Virginia season is winding down (ends on Dec. 31), but some big stripers from the ocean have moved within the bay. Umbrella rigs have been effective weapons.   Giant bluefin tuna have shown up in numbers off Virginia Beach. The fish are strung out from Morehead City, NC to Maryland. Slot size fish have been caught in 50 to 60 feet of water off Smith Island, where there are a lot of Omega Menhaden boats competing for their food source.   The Bay’s water temperature is currently hovering in the high 50s, which means that the trophy speckled trout are on the feed.
