Save Big Bucks with VSGA Card

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

One of the knocks against golf these days is that it’s expensive. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. My golfing Amigos and I have been wearing out our VSGA VIP cards, making the game a lot less expensive and a lot more fun since we’re playing lots of different courses. A VIP basically allows a golfer to have free greens fees with a cart rental. Looking back over 2017, I have used my Virginia … [Read more...]

Greene Hills Golf

November 2, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Golf is special anytime. But tee it up on a clear autumn day in Central Virginia with mountains and changing leaves in the background, and it doesn’t get much better. One of the great courses to get in a round of fall golf is Greene Hills, outside Stanardsville. If you like beautiful, rolling hills at the foot of the Blue Ridge, you’ll love Greene Hills, a semi-private club, designed by … [Read more...]

Fall Golf at Swannanoa

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

When it comes to panoramic vistas on a Central Virginia golf course, all others come in no better than second when compared to the Swannanoa Country Club on Afton Mountain. From several vantage points, a player can scan the horizon and see the Blue Ridge, the Southwest and the Allegheny Mountains – all at the same time. And right now, the leaves are just beginning to change. As I have … [Read more...]

Fall Golf: Old Trail

October 10, 2017 by Jim Brewer

In our current series on fall golf in Central Virginia, this week’s destination is Old Trail, at the very foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Crozet. Old Trail has had some ups and downs in the 15 or so years it has been around. When it first opened, it was awfully difficult. The course designer wanted almost a links course, with lots of high grass and grown up areas. Problem was, with all … [Read more...]

Fall Favorites: Ingleside

October 5, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Virginia is blessed with a four season climate and perhaps the most spectacular of all the seasons – color wise – is fall, which is right now, which is also a great time to play a little golf and take in the scenery. In the next few weeks – as if us golfers needed more incentive to tee it up – we’ll take a look at some of the most scenic courses in Central Virginia. Right near the top … [Read more...]

The Art of the Putt

September 28, 2017 by Jim Brewer

My putting has gone south. Vamoose. Adios. See ya’ later. Staring down a foot-foot putt has been like challenging a grizzly bear on a mountain trail and guess who wins? The four-foot putt. When in doubt, “Ask a pro”, is pretty good advice, so I am repeating an article I did some 8 years ago when I interviewed Daryl Daughtry, the PGA Pro at Rivanna Resort. Here goes and I hope I … [Read more...]

Golf Retreat at Cliff View

September 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Golf can be expensive. Not counting the $4 balls that go sailing into the high grass and the $500 drivers that are sure to get you an extra 10 yards off the tee, there are the fees to play the courses, which can exceed $200 a round. But golf doesn’t have to be expensive, and a golfing retreat for friends, businesses or organizations can be productive, inexpensive and fun – at Cliff View Golf … [Read more...]

Fall Rates at Ingleside

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Fall is a great time to be outdoors, especially in the Shenandoah Valley and especially on a scenic golf course like Ingleside. Just in time for the fall weather, Ingleside is offering Special Fall Rates. From September 1, Monday through Friday, rates are just $30 for 18 holes, with a cart. On Saturday and Sunday, rates are $35 for 18 holes, again with a cart. Player can go 9 holes any day with … [Read more...]

Diamond Zoysia

August 17, 2017 by Jim Brewer

We were on a short vacation to Lake Norman near Charlotte last weekend and I had a chance to play three rounds of golf – two at Mallard Head Country Club in Mooresville and one at Trump National Charlotte. I had played Mallard Head before at a family reunion tournament but they had closed the course in June when we normally play. They were in process of re-doing all the greens. Now … [Read more...]

Charlottesville Golf Center

August 10, 2017 by Jim Brewer

After 23 years, Charlottesville Golf Center is closing its doors. The city of Charlottesville will now have zero golf shops owned by local folks. CGC opened in 1994 in what is now the 29th Place Shopping Center, across from Fashion Square Mall. Two years ago, they relocated at a 4,000 square foot store at 3285 Berkmar Drive. The store is now liquidating its inventory. Stop by soon, … [Read more...]
