Salmon Pilaf

August 31, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Salmon has become a staple in our house. It’s good for you, it’s a nice change of pace from beef, pork and chicken and it tastes good – most any way you prepare it. I bought a pound and a half filet this week and decided to experiment – slightly. I decided to make Salmon Pilaf. It sounds exotic, but it’s really not. I simply baked the Salmon on a nice bed of Rice Pilaf. According to the … [Read more...]

Long Live the Loggerhead

August 31, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Molly Kirk/DWR   You might not think of sea turtles when you think of the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), but the agency is responsible for those species as well. The loggerhead turtle is the most abundant species of sea turtle that nests in the United States, but the Northwest Atlantic population is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, as of … [Read more...]

Nice Spanish Macs

August 31, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Unfortunately, the weather does not look favorable for fishing in Virginia waters this Labor Day weekend, as the cold front lingering in North Carolina is bringing instability to the area. Mid-week there is also a chance of strong winds, as Tropical Storm Idalia approaches. However, there are still some fish to be caught, especially Spanish Mackerel. The Big Mac attacks are happening from the … [Read more...]

Let’s Twist Again

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Someone had rented the banquet hall above the pool room in downtown Lewisburg for a dance party on a Saturday night in September 1960. I was a pretty good dancer back then. My Aunt Jodi had taught me how to “Jitterbug”, but when I got upstairs, I didn’t recognize what they were doing. It was something called The Twist, and they played Chubby Checker’s mega hit over and over. The girls looked … [Read more...]

Hummer Wars

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

They’re at it again. Every year, one hummingbird assumes squatter’s rights on any and all our backyard hummingbird feeders. He visits them frequently, but he absolutely stands guard 24/7 lest an intruder sneak in for a sip of sugar water. And one always does. I guess they draw straws to see whose feeder is whose. But they battle every day, throughout the day. So why this violence? They … [Read more...]

Soup’s On

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I don’t often make soup. That’s because I consider soup a medicine, like aspirin or NyQuil, for when you’re sick. When it’s dinnertime, I want meat and potatoes. But Nancy likes soup. She likes soup even when she’s not sick. So, I decided to make soup. The easiest possible recipe I found, other than opening a can of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup (which I considered as an option) was one for … [Read more...]

Restore Wildlife in Your Back Yard

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Molly Kirk When you make decisions about how to maintain your yard and property this fall, keep in mind that there are many different species of wildlife that call your yard home. While raking leaves and mowing tall grass might create a neater “look” for your yard, leaving your yard with a somewhat messier appearance creates valuable food and shelter for not only birds, but also pollinators, … [Read more...]

BBQ Time!

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Panic! I just used the last of my Charlie Mills BBQ Sauce Seasonings. I’m down to one pint jar of the splendid Carolina concoction in the fridge. In a few days I’ll have more because I just ordered two more bags. I used to make my own BBQ sauce, Carolina style, of course. But when I stumbled on Charlie Mills secret blend of peppers and spices, I no longer have to empty my spice cabinet to make … [Read more...]

First-Ever Virginia Record Saugeye

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Virginia now has an official State Record Saugeye.  Mike Miller used a crankbait to net the 6-pounder on the Staunton River. The record fish measured 26.25-inches long, with a 14-inch girth at Bobcat’s Bait and Tackle in Clarksville, Va. The prized catch was inspected by a state fisheries biologist, and the Virginia records keeping committee reviewed the record applications and verified … [Read more...]
