A New User for Food Savers

September 27, 2024 by Jim Brewer

I am in love with my Food Saver system. It has literally saved us hundreds of dollars as there is always lots of waste when cooking just for two. Bacon, for example. We have it maybe once a week. So, I’ll buy a pound of bacon and divide into three or four portions, freezing the extras for later use. And recently, I bought a large package of fresh green beans from Aldi’s. I cooked half, put the … [Read more...]

3 D Movies

September 27, 2024 by Jim Brewer

When the 1950s arrived, Americans were wide open There was nothing we wouldn’t do or try. We were suckers for fads and there were many – including 3 D movies. For the film industry, the 3D films came at an ideal time, when people were staying home to watch Lassie and Gunsmoke on their new Zenith television consoles and keeping movie theater seats unoccupied. With aid of special glasses, 3D … [Read more...]

The Old Downtown Charlottesville

September 27, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Downtown Charlottesville used to be a fun place to shop. There was on-street parking, and you could always find a spot. There was a wonderful, upscale Miller & Rhodes store. I often went there to buy the ladies of my family Christmas presents, and across the street was a Leggett Store. Also, on Main Street was C.H. Williams and Tillman’s department stores, plus the Young Men’s Shop. There was … [Read more...]

Leftover Salmon (Cakes)

September 27, 2024 by Jim Brewer

One of the best deals in the grocery section is one of those whole sides of a fresh salmon. It serves an army and there are usually leftovers. I have found a recipe that takes care of that problem. In fact, these salmon cakes might make you buy extra salmon on purpose. I happen to like plain old salmon cakes made from canned salmon. These are better, and I think the French Onions make the … [Read more...]

Billfish Action Peaking

September 26, 2024 by Jim Brewer

September is prime time for billfish action out of both Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks. Bait is plentiful, the water is warm, and the marlin and sailfish are hungry. Virginia Beach Capt. Chris Raiford and his crew on the Sniper were flying 7 flags for with 3 blue marlin and 4 white marlin releases. The Wahoo bite is picking up steam and bluewater boats are still finding … [Read more...]

Guns of My Life

September 19, 2024 by Jim Brewer

A Remington 1100 .410 gauge semi-automatic   I have owned a lot of guns in my life. Beside the two starter single barrel shotguns, I have owned and shot a 12 gauge LC Smith Double, a 16 Gauge Fox Sterlingworth Double, a Browning Sweet 16 and multiple rifles and pistols. But my favorite gun of all time – which I still have – is my Remington Model 1100 .410 shotgun. I came across it … [Read more...]

Knives and Frying Pans

September 19, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Nancy and I love our little 3-day getaways to various cottages, condos, and Air B & Bs. We have stayed at numerous places, and I have found one thing in a common. None of them have sharp knives or decent frying pans. So, I bring my own and it makes the stay much more enjoyable. The sharp knife problem is not because the knives aren’t of good quality. It’s that they get a lot of wear and … [Read more...]

Apple Sauce Muffins

September 19, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Nothing hits the spot like a warm muffin and a cold glass of milk, particularly when fall arrives and ice clings to your windshield. Muffins are generally healthy; they taste great and they’re not all that hard to make. One of my go-to recipes is this one for Apple Sauce Muffins. I made a batch this week. Yumm! Heat the oven to 375 and spray a muffin tin with a little Pam. I then take a … [Read more...]

Old Businesses of Charlottesville

September 19, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Great Clothiers Now Gone   I saw that Eljo’s is either going to soon sell out or close its doors, marking the end of a string of fantastic clothiers in Charlottesville. When I moved to Charlottesville in 1967 to take the reins of the Men’s Department at Leggett Barrack’s Road, the competition was fierce. Three doors down was Ed Michtom’s, who sold the finest brands available and had … [Read more...]

Eating In

September 19, 2024 by Jim Brewer

We did a lot of “Eating Out” last weekend on our Deltaville getaway. We supped at The Galley and The Front Porch and visited the Deltaville Raw Bar and Grill for drinks, but the best dining experience came when we ate in. Wanting to enjoy our last evening and not have to worry about the 20 mile or so drive into town and back, we stopped at J & W’s Seafood during our mid-day trip to … [Read more...]
