Mexican Cornbread

August 21, 2025 by Jim Brewer

As I have mentioned on many occasions, as a wanna-be Tex/Mex Chef, I find it easy to fix Mexican Entrees, it’s the side dishes that give me trouble. However, I think I came across a winner this week. I made some Mexican Cornbread and if you like a little heat with your bread, this is a winner. It all starts with Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix – which is darned good with the basic recipe out of the box. … [Read more...]

Deviled Eggs: In a Bun?

August 21, 2025 by Jim Brewer

A few weeks back I wrote about eating Pulled Pork BBQ on hot dog buns, saying that you can get just as much BBQ on the hot dog bun as on a hamburger bun; they’re easier to eat; and the BBQ stays put. My friend, Guido Lamonica, has perhaps even a better idea. Put three deviled eggs in a hot dog bun, maybe a little mayo, and – Voila! An instant Eggs Salad Sandwich. How easy is that and how … [Read more...]

A Big Fan of Parchment Paper

August 21, 2025 by Jim Brewer

I discovered parchment paper late in life. I always assumed it was something used in unique baking recipes of Gourmet Chefs. Boy, was I wrong? I first started using parchment paper on cookie sheets, so the cookies wouldn’t stick to the pan. I bought it in pre-cut sheets, about the same size as the cookie sheet. Then, I noticed it worked for almost any dish where sticking or difficult clean-ups … [Read more...]

Sunflower Festival Underway

August 21, 2025 by Jim Brewer

On several occasions, Nancy and I have hopped in the car and headed for Liberty Mills Farm near Somerset in Orange County. It’s a lovely drive and we find many interesting things to do – like wind our way through a sprawling Corn Maze or pick a pint of two of fresh strawberries. Liberty Farms now has their annual Sunflower Festival underway with lots of food and fun and things to see and do. … [Read more...]

Birthdays Are So Much Fun

August 21, 2025 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B Celebrating one of our own was so fun.  Sherri Perri, our Lighting Showroom Manager has been with Nancy B’s for years and has just had a very special birthday.  She turned the big Six-O, but looks 40, if that. We celebrate all sorts of holidays around here but especially birthdays. We are so happy Sherri was born. She is a real asset, the builders love her … [Read more...]

Fishing on the “Doghouse”

August 21, 2025 by Jim Brewer

By James Dickerson We had a great trip last week!  On August 14 we left Wanchese Harbor on the “Doghouse” just before 3 PM as the storms moved in.  The rain hit before we left the sound and headed to the bar.  This trip provided 13-year-old Hawkins Groseclose his first trip inshore ocean fishing.  Rob and Shannon Harrison (Hawkin's stepfather and mother joined … [Read more...]

Hurricanes: Bring ’em On

August 21, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Fishing during the middle of a hurricane with winds up to 150 miles per hour is not recommended. However, the period right before a hurricane and right after can offer some of the best fishing of the year. The period following a big blow finds the water stirred and baits confused and dislodged, and anglers can often have a hay day. Last year, I fished off the Piankatank River right after a big … [Read more...]

Baseball Mitts

August 14, 2025 by Jim Brewer

We called them mitts, not gloves. But they were among our prized possessions - baseball gloves. I had a toy glove until I was 10. It was a cheap piece of synthetic with not enough padding to slow down a ping pong ball. When I tried out for Little League, and I needed a real glove. Daddy took me to a local hardware/sporting goods shop, and I found one that fit. It was signed by Chico Carresquel, … [Read more...]

Outer Banks Driftwood

August 14, 2025 by Jim Brewer

If you can’t go to the Outer Banks, bring the Outer Banks to you. That’s what we did a few years back. After a great four-day getaway, we stopped by Outer Banks Driftwood in Kill Devil Hills on our way back home and bought three pieces of beautiful driftwood. One is now overlooking our goldfish pond. It’s a classic cypress stump that washed up on shores of the Outer Banks, no telling how many … [Read more...]

Gone Fishing with a Green Heron

August 14, 2025 by Jim Brewer

My daughter, Angelin, and I went fishing early this week at a friend’s lake. The fish were not very cooperative, but still, a bad day’s fishing beats a good day of most anything else. I pulled up a chair at the lake’s edge, lit up a cigar and cast out a Berkley Power Bait Minnow in hopes of a bite.  Angelin was in a paddle boat, trolling a lure, then pointed to the bank and said, “Daddy, … [Read more...]
