Lake Anna Forecast

November 12, 2015 by Jim Brewer

PJ Cox with an 8 pound 3 ounce Lake Anna largemouth   Lake Anna November Forecast by Chris Craft   Bass - Look for fish to be aggressive and chasing pods of baitfish (Threadfin Shad & Blueback Herring) at anytime throughout the day. Top water baits are an exciting way to catch these feeders. My choices are a Paycheck Baits Repoman, Damiki Rambler, Don Iovino Spash It, … [Read more...]

More Nags Head Stripers

November 12, 2015 by Jim Brewer

The stripers in the sound are still biting, says Capt. Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Guide Service, but the powers that be won’t report it. The thinking goes that if more anglers knew about the inshore bite, fewer would take the bluewater trips offshore. Regardless, CvilleBuzz is happy to report the good news and to urge anglers interested in catching a quick limit of stripers to head for the sounds … [Read more...]

Columns To Remember

November 12, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I have been writing outdoor columns for over 30 years. I thought it would be fun to go back in the archives and print a few of the oldies. Below is the first in this series.   Go Easy on the Scent Wafers   It was my annual bow hunt in Bath County, an opportunity to fell a deer with a deadly shot to the heart. Trouble is, for the past couple seasons, my arrows have remained … [Read more...]

Mastering the Flop Shot

November 12, 2015 by Jim Brewer

On occasion I’ll hit a decent drive on a short par 4, followed by an iron that is just right in distance, but a little left of the green. Like many average golfers, I tend to pull short irons. The problem I now find myself in is being within sniffing distance of the pin, but looking into the bowels of the nastiest sand trap this side of the Sahara. Even worse, the green is sloping away and I only … [Read more...]

A Pile of Leaves

November 12, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Are colors more vivid when you are young? It certainly seems so to this Ol’ Boomer. I remember a pair of red maple trees in our front yard in Lewisburg, WV. I was 11 the first year we lived in that house on Court Street. There was nothing unusual about those two trees in the spring and summer, other than the grass beneath them was always a good spot to catch a few night crawlers for fish … [Read more...]

Skyline Graphics

November 12, 2015 by Jim Brewer

In the past year, I have established two new businesses, and as with any new adventure, how you brand your business and how inviting your logo is will often make a big difference in the success of the new venture. Fortunately, finding a good graphics person was easy for me since my good friend, Sue Overton, is one of the most talented graphic artists I have been associated with – and I have … [Read more...]

Brown Bagging Tomatoes

November 12, 2015 by Jim Brewer

We had a bumper crop of tomatoes this summer – both large tomatoes and the smaller, cherry tomatoes. Our vines were still producing as the first frost approached, so we picked each green tomato that night and brought them indoors. We have since been eating these tomatoes on tossed salads as they ripen in the house. Brown paper bags work great as incubators for the green tomatoes. Simply clean … [Read more...]

The Right Pot

November 12, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Sometimes it’s not what you put in the pot that makes a terrific dish. Sometimes, it’s the pot you put the food in that makes all the difference. Cooking oysters, for example. It’s hard to screw up an oyster. They’re even good if you drop one on the floor and scoop it up quickly and eat it raw. They are not so good, however, if you try to fry them and you put too many in a pan, or if you don’t … [Read more...]

I Got The Blues

November 5, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Virginia Saltwater Dr. Julie Ball Yet another front will roll through this weekend, but that’s just how the weather behaves starting in October along the Mid Atlantic coast. A few decent days during the week gave some anglers a chance to get out on the water, while surf anglers continue to line local shorelines. Not much has changed from last week on the fishing front, except that we now … [Read more...]

Trout Update

November 5, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Excellent conditions now exist on all our mountain brook trout streams, and many brookies will still rise to a fluffy dry fly, like a Wulff, Humpy or Mr., Rapidan. Spring creeks in the valley are fishing well and trout are looking for wayward crickets and beetles.   Trout Stocking The following streams were stocked this week: Bath Co.: Douthat Lake & Wilson Creek … [Read more...]
