My Legacy

February 11, 2016 by Jim Brewer

By Alan Bittman   Not to sound melancholy, but someday all of us will be gone, leaving behind memories and a legacy. No, I am not depressed but, rather, proud that I have already made my bequest. I was wise enough to share my love of the outdoors with my sons and daughter. I started taking them with me when they were quite young, haunting Greene County’s South River in the spring and … [Read more...]

Perfect Potato Wedges

February 11, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Perfect Potato Wedges By Jimmie Brewer   On a recent trip to Atlanta to see my son Jimmie and his family, the Atlanta Brewers served us salmon in caper sauce along with potato wedges. The salmon was delicious but the potato wedges were truly remarkable, so much so that I asked for the recipe. It’s not often that you ask for a potato wedge recipe, but these were special. I have had … [Read more...]

White Buck Shoes

February 11, 2016 by Jim Brewer

I suppose it all started with saddle oxfords. In the early 1950’s, these black and white shoes took America by storm. Coinciding with dancing and the Jitterbug, saddle oxfords drew attention to fast moving feet. They were supremely popular with Boomers guys and gals. Then came suede shoes, immortalized by Elvis Presley’s version of Blue Suede Shoes released in 1956. With suede shoes in vogue, … [Read more...]

Oldies But Goodies

February 11, 2016 by Jim Brewer

A game warden sneaks up on a man sitting on the bank with a fishing rod and a bucket of minnows. “Let me see your fishing license,” the warden growls, certain that he has a culprit dead to rights. “I’m not fishing,” the man said. “I’m training my minnows.” “What do you mean, training minnows?” the warden asked. “These are special minnows. When I let them go in the water, and if I beat … [Read more...]

Chomping at the Bit

February 11, 2016 by Jim Brewer

My fellow backyard gardener, Bill Hitt, orders seeds from multiple catalogues. As a result, he’s on every gardening mailing list in North America. The postman needs a wheelbarrow to get the catalogues up his driveway. I, however, am on just a few lists but already my contacts are sending me seed catalogues. I am beyond ready to get seeds in the ground and to get my garden going. Another fellow … [Read more...]

The Perch Are Biting

February 4, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Sure, it snowed two feet last week, but Virginia’s yellow perch population doesn’t mind. They are preparing to spawn and are biting right now. Mike Johncox at Riverside Camp in Lanexa says he thinks it will be two more weeks before the bite begins in earnest, but one of his customers, Karen Wells of Sandston, weighed in a citation perch that measured 12 ¾ inches and weighed in at 1 ¾ pounds. … [Read more...]

Two Top Techniques

February 4, 2016 by Jim Brewer

By Capt. Steve Chaconas   Want a couple tried and true methods of catching cold-water bass? Capt. Steve Chaconas notes that the Silver Buddy blade baits and Lucky Craft suspending jerkbaits will cover the two Potomac River water temperature regions. Says Chaconas: The water is still around 34 for most of the river with discharge areas near 50. Weather will be cooling into the mid 40s … [Read more...]

Spending Money for Boomers

February 4, 2016 by Jim Brewer

It didn’t take a lot of money for a young Boomer to have a few niceties in life. Candy bars were a nickel, ice cream sandwiches were a dime and Fleers Double Bubble Gum was just a penny a chew, but in the 50’s and 60’s, there wasn’t a lot of extra money lying around. Most Boomers had to supplement their dime-a-week allowances with extra income. In other words, many of us had to take on second … [Read more...]

Lots of Finches

February 4, 2016 by Jim Brewer

If you haven’t seen any finches at your feeders lately, it’s because they are all over in my yard, and I mean all of them. I have never seen so many finches. They are like a cast of thousands in a Cecil B. DeMille epic film. The finches I speak of are house finches. Some confuse them with purple finches because the male house finch has a reddish tint. The females are rather ordinary looking … [Read more...]
