White Albacore Salad

June 9, 2016 by Jim Brewer

It’s summer – time for tuna fish salad piled high on a bed of lettuce or better yet, ladled thickly on some white bread as the centerpiece of a great sandwich. But instead of plain, old tuna salad, why not go first class and make white albacore salad? Albacore is known as white tuna while the other tunas, yellowfin, skipjack or big-eye are in the “light tuna” category. The albacore is found … [Read more...]

A Mess of Peas

June 9, 2016 by Jim Brewer

One of the joys of a backyard garden is harvesting a mess of peas – green peas, or sweet peas as I call them. They are called sweet peas because the tasty veggies have both sugar and starch. At the same time, they are extremely healthy, loaded with something called phytonutrients, which provide key antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. That’s all well and good, but the main reason I plant … [Read more...]

Golf Course Ecology

June 2, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Is a golf course good or bad, environmentally speaking? Many think it’s bad, using precious water resources and occupying prime real estate while appealing only to a select few. Wouldn’t the plant and animal life, and society in general, fare better with all those acres of land used in a different manner? Not necessarily. A golf course, in fact, offers more in the way of plant and animal value … [Read more...]

Cobia season Extended

June 2, 2016 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Ken Neill, III Virginia will have a cobia season this summer, but regulations will be much more restrictive than we are used to. Starting June 1, the minimum size will increase from 37 inches to 40 inches. Anglers will still be allowed 1 fish per person but only up to 2 fish per boat. Only one fish may be greater than 50 inches. Also, gaffs may not be used to land cobia in 2016. The … [Read more...]

Fish The Chick

June 2, 2016 by Jim Brewer

The Chickahominy Lake near Providence Forge is one of the most productive lakes in Virginia. The 1,230-acre impoundment that serves as the water supply for Newport News has lots of cover in the form of lily pads, cypress trees and channel mouths. Anglers at the Chick never know what they will catch. The lake’s inhabitants include largemouth, crappie, shellcrackers, bluegills, yellow perch, channel … [Read more...]

Jiffy Peat Pellets

June 2, 2016 by Jim Brewer

As a backyard gardener, I have been struggling with my tomato crops, of all things. We don’t require a lot of tomatoes, just enough for some sandwich and salad makings, and maybe a few to can. The past two years have not been good. Two summers ago I bought some small plants from a nursery and they grew mightily, plant-wise. They grew so tall I thought maybe they were tomatoes of the Jack and … [Read more...]

More Muffins

June 2, 2016 by Jim Brewer

About a month ago, I saw a box of Blueberry Muffin Mix from Krusteaz, and knowing I had a bunch of extra blueberries, I bought the mix, added some fresh blueberries and the muffins were delicious. This week, I saw that Krusteaz made a Banana Nut Muffin Mix, and I put that in my grocery cart. My wife, Nancy, particularly enjoys muffins. Three days a week, she is up at 4:30 and off to the gym. … [Read more...]

Boomers & Guardian Angels

June 2, 2016 by Jim Brewer

I expect God’s legion of Guardian Angels is breathing a sigh of relief. Boomers have grown up and most survived their youth, thanks largely to our Heavenly Helpers. Today’s children don’t really need Guardian Angels – they have, after all, a doting government bureaucracy and millions of overprotective parents. If you see a youngster today riding a bike – with parents lurking close by and … [Read more...]
