An Apple a Day

April 12, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Or guest columnist, Sherman Shifflett, shares with us his memories of apples and orchards   An Apple a Day   By Sherman Shifflett     From the time I can first remember, I lived around orchards. Dad worked most of his adult life in the orchards near Covesville in Albemarle County. He knew a lot about grafting, planting, pruning, thinning, spraying and … [Read more...]

Brown Bags and School Lunches

April 12, 2016 by Jim Brewer

My daughter was telling me recently about the “Dos and Don’ts” of school lunches - especially lunches sent from home. Apparently, the modern Lunch Nazis now rifle through each Spiderman lunchbox or brown paper bag to approve or disapprove of what children can eat. Donuts are definite “no-no’s and so are Oreo cookies. When I was a kid, you only got an Oreo cookie if you’d behaved yourself the day … [Read more...]

Sight Fishing in Carolina

April 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Sight Fishing in Carolina Capt. Allen Cain Reports   The weather is finally starting to warm and get more consistent here in coastal NC. This in turn has made fishing more productive as warming water temperatures are making fish more aggressive. It’s still spring, so we get the occasional rainy/windy days, but for the most part it has been nice the last few weeks. Redfish are … [Read more...]

Fish in the Shallows

April 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

According to Capt. Steve Chaconas, bass in the Potomac River have committed to the spawning flats, but will move a bit deeper this week as water cools. “Expect water to be cooling from the low 60s to upper 50s this week,” he says. For fish close to drops, find them on the drops. In these areas, it’s drop shots and shaky heads. For shaky heads, try 1/4 ounce Mizmo BarbWire heads with black … [Read more...]

Drum Time in Virginia

April 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Ken Neill, III   They have a face that only a mother could love. Black drum lack the beautiful red-golden glow and the more streamlined body of their close cousin, the red drum. They do not give you the blistering runs or acrobatic leaps that are the trademarks of some of the more popular game fish. While considered a delicacy in a few localized areas, they are not highly thought of … [Read more...]

Mom’s Cooking

April 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett   Not long before Mom passed away in 2003, I asked for some of her recipes. She replied, "I don't have no recipes. I just throw stuff together".  Then it dawned on me that I had never seen her measure anything, but I remember some of the things she did. Mom put a pinch of sugar in everything she cooked: A pinch of sugar in boiled potatoes; a pinch of sugar in … [Read more...]

Caution: Boomers Mowing Grass

April 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

I suppose I was about 10 years old when my dad decided I should mow the grass. We didn’t have very big yard on Jennings Street, in Beckley WV, but we also didn’t have a very good lawnmower. It was a push mower, a manual push mower, meaning you did all the pushing and if you went fast enough, the blades would rotate and maybe cut the grass. Or maybe not. It probably didn’t help that the blades on … [Read more...]

Move Better

April 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

I had a pain in my neck, literally. I had been fishing with Capt. Dick Whitehill and had reeled in numerous stripers on a pleasant day last November. Unfortunately, the fishing rod and reel out I was in charge of had a one-pound, ball sinker at the business end and it was a beast to reel in. After our trip, my neck hurt like the dickens. Later that week, I went to my primary care doctor to make … [Read more...]

March 31, 2016 by Jim Brewer

For those who miss the opening day of trout season in Virginia, the Game Department has set aside Saturday April 2 as the next best thing – Trout Heritage Day. The selected streams and lakes will be closed on Friday, to allow for a big stocking, then reopen on Saturday at 9 AM giving everyone a chance to arrive and set up. Looks like decent weather on Saturday. Pick a stream from below and take … [Read more...]
