They introduced them to us in 5th grade. They were fountain pens – with real ink, with pointed tips and some sort of lever that sucked the ink up into the pen. We were supposed to learn to write with them in long hand and not smear our scribbles all over the paper. They might as well have asked me to walk across the high wire at a Ringling & Brothers Circus. Every day, I came home with ink … [Read more...]
Birds in the Snow
We have had two snows in the last week, and though they weren’t big snows, it was enough to completely cover the grounds and cause extra stress on birds and animals. I have since been feeding my birds extra helpings of seeds and have been observing their activities.I have two basic feeding areas – one near the kitchen window and beneath my permanent feeders and the other in the way back near my … [Read more...]
Butterbeans
We called them butterbeans – Fordhook Limas, that is. They were a staple on our kitchen tables, making special showings during Christmas and Thanksgiving, or when company came. Sometimes we had them with sweet corn, as in succotash, and sometimes we had them by themselves in bowls, soaking with butter. I guess that’s why we called them butterbeans. Recently, I have been having a hard time … [Read more...]
Bob Evans Mashed Potatoes
Nancy spent hours and hours in the kitchen in advance of Thanksgiving, baking pies and cakes, roasting turkeys, making dressing, snacks and so forth, but one thing she didn’t have to worry with this year was Mashed Potatoes. Our friend, Bob Evans, handled that and did an excellent job. Bob Evans, of course, is a restaurant chain based in Ohio with over 430 locations nationwide. They compete … [Read more...]
CvilleBuzz.com
A friend emailed me this week and asked if I could start sending Cville Buzz to someone that enjoys my columns. I would like to, but I can’t. They have to do it from their end. Just go to Cvillebuzz.com and hit the subscribe button. Then it will ask if you are sure you want to subscribe. Hit “yes” and you’re in business. If you regularly forward bits and pieces of the Buzz to a friend, suggest … [Read more...]
The Footbridge to Nowhere
Recently, VDOT completed an overhead walkway/bikeway across Route 29 south of the Post Office. I suppose the endeavor cost in the neighborhood of $5 million. The walkway goes from Burton’s Steakhouse over to Burger King. I suppose the rationale of our all-knowing government was that someone who just had a $50 steak at Burton’s, but couldn’t afford an automobile, would then be able to walk across … [Read more...]
Ya Gotta Go Grocery Shopping
There is an old tale about a fellow who prayed every day to win the lottery, and he never did. When he went to heaven, he asked God why it was that he never won. And God said, “You had to have bought a ticket.” Beef and some grocery prices are high, but they don’t have to be. It’s kind of like “You had to have bought a ticket”, but it’s this: “You have to go to the grocery store on a regular … [Read more...]
Tuna Season Just Came and Went
The tuna season lasted just a few days as the commercial quota was quickly reached. A few of the big boys were wrestled in and they are still out there – just off the Virginia coast to be caught on a catch and release basis. At Nags Head, boats are hooking up with lots of blackfin tuna when they sail. A few big drum were beached at Ocracoke. In Virginia, the best action is over the wrecks and … [Read more...]
Hula Hoops
In the 1950’s you could have sold Eskimos bags of ice. America was ready for anything. It was the age of Rock and Roll and fancy cars with big engines. It was a time of innocence, yet daring. It was the time when television sets rolled into our living rooms and changed our lives. It was also the time of Hula Hoops. Faster than the spread of Covid in a telephone booth, Hula Hoops swept … [Read more...]
It’s Bonefish for the Best Fish & Chips
After a week of stuffing ourselves with turkey, mashed potatoes, pies and cakes, Nancy and I decided to go out for dinner on Thanksgiving Sunday. I was in the mood for some Fish & Chips and that meant a trip to Bonefish. Fish & Chips is a specialty of the house at Bonefish Grill. Fish and chips, of course, is a dish consisting of battered and fried fish, served … [Read more...]
