It’s Bug Time for Smallmouth

September 18, 2025 by Jim Brewer

They are not everywhere, but in certain spots the screech of cicadas is piercing the treetops and smallmouth bass are quick to notice, moving in along the banks, hoping for a big fat bug to fall near them. That’s why “bugs”, popping bugs, are doing a number on the river bronze backs. According to Alex McCrickard of the Division of Wildlife Resources, the annual cicadas in Virginia excite fly … [Read more...]

Drumming Up Business

September 18, 2025 by Jim Brewer

If you were fishing on the Carolina coast last week, odds are you were “drumming” up business, as in catching or trying to catch drum. John Savides of Afton wrestled in a slot size drum from the beaches of Topsail, and anglers on the Outer Banks were caching these powerful fish from piers, from the surf and from nearshore and sound side boats. The best bait was finger mullet, which was flying off … [Read more...]

Ant Watching

September 11, 2025 by Jim Brewer

I was sitting on the dock at our rental cottage off the Elizabeth River and life was good. I had a cigar in one hand a tall glass of Buffalo Trace Bourbon in the other. I also had a fishing pole baited with fresh shrimp leaning against the rail of the dock. Then I caught a spot, then a croaker. As I said, life is good. Leaning back in my chair I watched the gulls in their aerial ballets and … [Read more...]

Bubba’s Seafood Restaurant

September 11, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Anytime Nancy and I are in the Tidewater area of Virginia, we manage to find our way to Bubba’s Seafood Restaurant on Shore Drive, north of Virginia Beach.  Bubba’s is a family-owned restaurant but started as a small bait and tackle shop over 30 years ago. Located on the water in Lynnhaven Inlet, Bubba’s began offering Crab Cakes and other seafood delicacies to their hungry tackle … [Read more...]

Food Savers: Multiple Uses

September 11, 2025 by Jim Brewer

Food Savers: Multiple Uses I confess. I do not use Food Saver as often as I should. We throw tons of food away and most could be saved with a Vacuum Sealed Food Saver sheet.  Meat, veggies, everything. But I have found even more uses for these heavy-duty plastic sheets. A few weeks ago, I put a package of chicken directly from the store in the bottom of the fridge, and it leaked. … [Read more...]

A Half Loaf of Goodness

September 11, 2025 by Jim Brewer

They say, “A half loaf is better than none”, but I say a half loaf is actually better than a whole loaf – if that half loaf is Artisan Style Bread from Lewis Bake Shop. It is the best sliced bread I have ever eaten. Recently, I have been seeing half-loaf breads offered in several grocery stores and the idea appeals to me since there are only 2 of us, and we don’t always have bread for toast and … [Read more...]

Packing For a Three Night Getaway

September 11, 2025 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer We planned a very brief time away on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk for some rest, relaxation, fishing, and to see “A Beautiful Noise”, the Neil Diamond musical at the Chrysler Theatre. I don’t recall if it was our children or whether we named our long weekend getaways “Mini Moons”, but we were about to experience another Mini Moon. After waiting for months, the play date … [Read more...]

North Carolina’s Two Week Flounder Season

September 11, 2025 by Jim Brewer

The scant 2-week North Carolina flounder season opened on September 1 and will end on September 14. Recreational anglers are allowed 1 fish daily, at least 15-inces. In Virginia, the season is year-round with a limit of 4 per day. In South Carolina, it’s also a year-round fishery with a limit of 5 per person or 10-fish per boat. Why the difference? Are flounder in North Carolina’s saltwater … [Read more...]

Not False Hopes: False Albacore

September 11, 2025 by Jim Brewer

On the Virginia saltwater scene, there has been a strong nearshore run of False Albacore, also known as Little Tunnies. These fish are fierce fighters for their size and are a prized catch on a fly rod. Boats patrolling the oceanfront are also running into blues and Spanish mackerel. In the mix are some whopper red drum and cobia, but no king mackerel were reported.   In the Chesapeake … [Read more...]
