Throughout this year, and for nearly 100 years, the Charlottesville Municipal Band has provided free concerts and entertainment for the public. But last year, the Charlottesville City Council decided not to help fund the band, declining their support of what had been $50,000 per year. Losing that much revenue and continuing to operate is a daunting task, but the Band has shifted venues to save … [Read more...]
Night Time No-Nos
There are lots of things that are best done at night. Going to a drive-in movie is one. Frog gigging is another. And who wants to park on lover’s lane in broad daylight? Well, maybe when it’s cloudy, but definitely not in broad daylight. One thing that is best done when you can see what you’re doing is fishing. In fact, nighttime fishing is clearly advised against by the American Medical … [Read more...]
Nags Head Golf
Each winter there is a mass migration from Charlottesville and Central Virginia. No, it’s not birds flying south for the winter, it’s golfers, most on the way to Myrtle Beach. No arguing that Myrtle Beach is a great golf destination with something like 200 courses in the vicinity, but there is another southern destination with some nice courses, a gentle winter climate and plenty to do for either … [Read more...]
Life On a Pier
By Jim Brewer If by the grace of God, I am given a free and undeserved pass to heaven, I expect to meet St. Peter - not at the Pearly Gates - but on the entrance to a fishing pier and greeted this way. “Here is a Penn rod and reel, Jim. You can spend eternity on this pier and the fish are biting.” I am truly happy on a pier, most any pier, and it’s been that way since I was a child, … [Read more...]
Nags Head Variety
A variety of fish are hitting baits for both surf anglers and pier jockeys. Pompano, bluefish, puppy drum, black drum, specks, spot and a few flounder were cooperative. Sound anglers were catching undersize stripers, some croakers, speckled trout, a few puppies and black drum. On Wednesday, offshore anglers brought in a slew of meat fish. Boats limited out on dolphin, and also boated plenty … [Read more...]
The Striper Bite at Buggs
Buggs Island Bobcat's in Clarksville reports that stripers are in most of the major creeks and are feeding on shad. These fish can be caught live-baiting with shad and jumbo minnows or by casting lures. Fishermen are getting good numbers, but keepers have been hard to come. Potomac River It's Cool Water temperatures are dropping. Look for water temperature to soon … [Read more...]
Sight Fishing for Redfish
By Capt. Alan Cain. Its been a very tough year overall in the Wilmington, NC area due to weather, but the last month has been significantly better. We still have storms and wind some days, but overall the temperatures are dropping and the weather is more consistent. Consistent weather equals consistent fishing. The redfishing has been great some days and slow others. It’s been … [Read more...]
Late Season Tomatoes
If it doesn’t frost, I’ll be picking tomatoes on Christmas day. All my gardening friends have been eating and enjoying their tomatoes throughout the summer and many have pulled up their now withering vines. Not me. My tomatoes are just starting to come in. I have cherry tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, Better Boys and grape tomatoes gushing forth. Some, I don’t remember planting, but in the next few … [Read more...]
Harvey’s Humor
Frequent contributor, Sherman Shifflett, is writing a book about his father, Harvey Shifflett. Below are a few excerpts from his upcoming book. Dad kept an inordinate number of roosters. One day mom asked him why he kept so many roosters. He replied, "I don't want the hens to suffer." When Dad went to bed, the entire family had to turn in. One night I told him, "You're … [Read more...]
Fish Heads in Nags Head
Just got back from a short getaway to Nags Head. The weather was beautiful, our condo on the ocean front was ideal and the food was delicious. When Nancy and I manage to be able to slip away to the beach, we like to rent a cottage or efficiency so we can cook a few meals. And we also like to splurge and go out a few times. Last weekend, we ate at some of our tried and true restaurants, and … [Read more...]
