King Arthur Flour: The Best

March 30, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Not all flour is created equal. I discovered this by accident on a recent shopping trip. I have been doing a lot of baking since I bought my Oster Bread Machine last fall. I have been buying my bread flour, which is necessary in most bread machine recipes, at Sam’s Club for about $7 for a 20-pound bag. A 5-pound bag in most grocery stores as around $2.99, so I try to buy bread flour at Sam’s’ … [Read more...]

Dogwood Blooms and Red Drum

March 30, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Ken Neill, III The dogwoods are blooming, which means that drum should be here. I have already heard rumors of black drum being caught and I have seen photos of small sheepshead caught in crab pots. Big red drum are being caught out of the Hatteras surf. Our run usually begins within a couple of weeks of the bite beginning down there. The full moon of April is the time when Eastern … [Read more...]

Remember Bazooka Joe?

March 23, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Bubble gum was one of the basic food groups for young Boomers. We grew up with the sticky stuff. It was a go-to sweet treat and it was cheap, just a penny. The Mom & Pop stores always had a jar on the counter. Reach in, grab a piece, lay down a penny and start chewing. Boomers became adept at blowing bubbles. A girl from Fresno, California, by the way, holds the world’s record for a bubblegum … [Read more...]

A Better Thistle Feeder

March 23, 2017 by Jim Brewer

From Jill Smith, Fluvanna County   Says Jill: I always enjoy reading C’ville Buzz.  Thank you for taking the time to write all those articles weekly. I’m sure some of that is quite a chore! You do a great job covering many areas of interest to many people. I read your article about finding a thistle feeder and, having tried those, I wanted to show you one that I think is the best … [Read more...]

Life On The Amazon

March 23, 2017 by Jim Brewer

My hunting pants had met their match in a spirited contest with a blackberry thicket on the last day of rabbit season. There was big tear across the right front leg and a 12-inch rip in the back seat. Unfortunately, the rip in the seat had nothing to do with the blackberry thicket, but more to do with too many blackberry pie servings throughout the year. I not only tore my hunting pants, but I … [Read more...]

Making Great Bar-B-Que

March 23, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Some of the best food on this planet is the simplest. Slow cooked pork, for example. Get a Boston Butt (pork shoulder), smother it in coarse pepper and Kosher salt, put some aluminum foil on top and cook it in a 285 oven until it falls apart – 8 hours or more. The longer you cook it, the better it gets. Pull the pork off in manageable portions and enjoy – it is plain and simply … [Read more...]

A Day To Remember

March 23, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Stephen Milandric   On December 13, 2014 I caught the largest blue catfish of my life. I was fishing the mighty James River with two great friends, Neil Renouf of Old Dominion Outdoors and Gary Harmon of Radford. At approximately 1:23 p.m., I got hit powerfully hard!  I reeled down fast with the rod still in the rod holder and it took less than a second to turn into stalemate … [Read more...]

Getting Ready To Hit Your Shot

March 23, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Daryl Daughtrey   An old golf guru once told me that when your shots start going everywhere, other than where you want them to go, head to the practice tee and start subtracting. Subtract everything you have read about the golf swing, what you’ve been told or learned about the golf swing. What this guru meant was that a golfer must get back to the basics. As golfers, we only have … [Read more...]

South River Update

March 23, 2017 by Jim Brewer

From Tommy Lawhorne   Fishing has been steady on the South River with caddis and midges hatching most days. Lots of nice trout are being caught on the Catch and Release Area near Downtown Waynesboro.  The Missing Link caddis dry and the amber Arlies' Gnarly Larva have been go to patterns. Above is a picture of Ian Hall with nice Rainbow from Downtown this week. Water levels continue … [Read more...]

Reach For The Sky

March 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Since the introduction of moving pictures, and especially after television arrived, Americans have been fascinated with the Old West. For Boomers, western movies were a mainstay of entertainment. On the Big Screen, the “oater” films hit their stride in the 1950’s. The plot of almost every western was the same: The good guy in the white hat rides into town, shoots the bad guys and rides off into … [Read more...]
