A Citation Brook Trout

April 13, 2017 by Jim Brewer

It was no April Fool’s joke when 12-year-old Zain Rehman from Ashburn in Northern Virginia, called out to his Dad, Fazal, “I think I got a big one!” Indeed he did - a citation 18 ¾-inch brook trout caught in the Rose River directly in front of Graves Mountain Lodge where he was fishing with 200 other youngsters at the annual Trout Heritage Kids Fishing Day. Do Not Pass Go!

April 6, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Breathes there a Boomer who doesn’t remember the terror of rounding Marvin Gardens and Pacific Avenue, only having to face two hotels on Boardwalk and Park Place. At $2,000 for rent, Boardwalk put many a young boomer in Chapter 11. After all, we played lots of board games in those days. Youngsters in the 50s and 60s didn’t have access to video games, and that was a good thing. We used our minds … [Read more...]

Catching Shad & Cooking Roe

April 6, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By James Friend Dickerson   Last week we took our granddaughter to visit North Carolina cousins. Two of us slipped away from the family visit, heading to a small coastal river.  The Hickory Shad were beginning their annual spawning run so we planned to catch a few. I’d never fished for Hickory Shad and was excited to be included in the adventure. We found a great spot in Windsor, NC … [Read more...]

Chipmunks Welcome

April 6, 2017 by Jim Brewer

When I was 12 years old and a full-fledged paperboy, one of the highlights of my morning route was to try to sneak up on the chipmunks at Nancy Young’s house. The Young’s had a rock wall as a landscape border and it was full of “munks”, the skitziest critters I have ever seen. They’d spot me coming and zip beneath the rocks in a flash. I have always found chipmunks to be interesting creatures … [Read more...]

Country Style Barbeque

April 6, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I rarely take a list to the grocery store – unless my wife Nancy wants me to pick up Australian pine nuts seasoned with papaya extract, or some other such strange request. I’m pretty much an eggs, flour, meat and potatoes shopper – nothing fancy. But I enjoy seeing what’s available and getting inspiration from what looks good. I was in Sam’s Club last week, poking around the meat section and … [Read more...]

April 6, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall By Nancy Brewer   Mirrors are a reflection on you and are more than just seeing yourself. They can be used in place of artwork. Sure, we need mirrors in bathrooms and the entry as we take one last look to make sure all is perfect before stepping out for the day. Mirrors make rooms appear larger, they accent a wall and are perfect for every room in your … [Read more...]
