Bunnies and Beans

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

A few weeks back, Nancy and I saw a mother rabbit building her nest against our backyard fence. Nancy checked the nest daily, and Voilà! One day they were there. Four, tiny baby bunnies. They stayed on or near the nest – with regular visits from Mom – for about a week, then left. Well, all but one left. One of the little fellows decided he liked our back yard just fine. No cats, no dogs and his … [Read more...]

Triple Chocolate Mess

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I found a recipe in one of my many cherished Church Cookbooks that looked interesting – especially if M7Ms, Reese’s Cups, chocolate pie and candies are your thing. Choco-holics, you know who you are. My thought on deserts are that if they don’t have chocolate in them, why bother? Just have another helping of potatoes. But this recipe caught my eye – Triple Chocolate Mess? They named it … [Read more...]

Eatin’ Out at Wegman’s?

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Wegman’s is a grocery store, not a restaurant. Isn’t it? Actually, Wegman’s is a grocery store with a restaurant inside. Nancy and I were in that area of town last Sunday and stopped by to check out the new store (it was my first visit) and since it was lunchtime, we went to their restaurant and ordered food and drinks. Wegman’s Food Markets, Inc. is a privately held American supermarket chain … [Read more...]

Craig’s List Equals Craig’s Risk

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Craig’s List was an amazing innovation. Buyers could list their products - for free - and be exposed to tens of thousands of potential buyers. The service started in San Francisco back in 1995 and spread like wildfire. It changed the used car industry and practically put the Want Ads in newspapers into mothballs. But now, crooks and scam artists are doing the same to Craig’s List. They have … [Read more...]

New Finishes of Contemporary Lighting

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The definition of contemporary can be confusing because of its slightly different meanings. In everyday use, it generally means simply modern or new. Or, the style of now. Contemporary lighting utilizes new techniques, new materials and creates something uniquely fresh. Contemporary lighting is eye candy at lighting markets, in magazines and at Nancy B’s. Many of our vendors have gone out of their … [Read more...]

River Action Heating Up

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

With most Virginia rivers back to normal flows and clear water, anglers are having excellent results, especially with smallmouth bass. Reports are below. New River Excellent smallmouth bass action on the New. The fish are taking plastic grubs, worms and Senkos in pumpkinseed and motor oil. Small crankbaits and topwater baits are also taking some nice fish. Lots of muskies are being … [Read more...]

Now Those Were Fireworks!

July 6, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The Fourth of July Week is typically known for fireworks and firework displays, but it is really sad to go to a firework’s stand in the city of Charlottesville, unless sparklers and smoke bombs are your thing. No more “O’er The Rockets Red Glare.” For the citizens of Thomas Jefferson’s fine town, it’s Psssst, Pffftt, Pshhhh! Oh, wow! But Boomers remember real fireworks, the kind … [Read more...]

A Reminder: Lights Out for Special Savings

July 6, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I spend a good bit of my time at Lights Out, a discount lighting store in Ruckersville. When there are no customers, I type. When customers come in, I sell, and we have the best bargains going in the lighting business. Each January, my wife Nancy and I go to the Dallas market. She may buy 100 new fixtures for her showroom, Nancy B’s House of Lights. When they come in, we take down … [Read more...]
