See Ya’, Cobia!

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Ken Neill, III   Cobia are going out with a bang. On clear days, sight-casting anglers are finding them in pods as they prepare to migrate out. On windy, NE blow days, chummers are having a field day. Enjoy them now as the season closes after September 15. If you have a recreational cobia permit and have not filed a catch report, do so by the end of September if you want to be able … [Read more...]

No Bluegill Left Behind

August 31, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I have decided that there is no such thing as a bluegill too small to keep. If they are big enough to bite the hook, they are big enough to scale, gut and toss in a hot skillet. In fact, I believe the best tasting are the smaller bluegills. To prove my point, I stopped by Lake Orange last weekend with a fly rod and a cup of red wigglers. Unquestionably, fly rods are bluegill-catching machines. Not … [Read more...]

Juke Boxes and Vanilla Sodas

August 24, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Anyone over the age of 50 knows first hand what a jukebox was. But ask a youngster today if he or she wants a nickel for the jukebox and you’ll get a blank stare. Boomers and jukeboxes grew up together and some of us are here because of jukeboxes, which brought our moms and dads together. In restaurants, at dance halls, at swimming pools, soda shops and fountains, there were jukeboxes. Some … [Read more...]

Chincoteague Report

August 24, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Good flounder action along the Narrows, just inside the inlet, along the Hook and around Buoy 14. Yellow-bellied spot, croaker, pan trout and snapper blues are available throughout the bays. Small sea bass are hitting along the oyster bottoms, with larger fish found around the bridge pilings. Outside the inlet, Spanish mackerel are close to the beach and big flounder, black sea bass, … [Read more...]

Lake Orange for Kids

August 24, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Over the years as an outdoor writer, I have frequently been asked the best place to take children fishing. My answer is that if you can drive an hour from Charlottesville, the best place to take a kid fishing is Lake Orange. It’s also one of my favorite places to wet a line. Lake Orange now offers a handicapped accessible pier, which is perfect for kids. They needn’t cast far, and, in … [Read more...]

Buttermilk Pork Chops

August 24, 2017 by Jim Brewer

When I was a boy, Mom always had a bottle of buttermilk in the refrigerator. Sometimes she drank it straight up, not my cup of tea, but she used it frequently when baking. Occasionally, I or my wife Nancy use a recipe that calls for buttermilk, like a cobbler she baked recently. Buttermilk is extremely versatile and I’m convinced there should be a pint or so of buttermilk in every chef’s … [Read more...]

Fans Part I

August 24, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer Whew, it’s been really hot and muggy this summer. That’s one reason the breeze from a fan is so welcoming. We have fans in most every room of our home and I don’t think that’s a southern thing. More and more, our builders install fan boxes in the bedrooms and living spaces of their homes. They too know just how important it is to offer their clients this much needed and enjoyed … [Read more...]

Weeds Be Gone

August 24, 2017 by Jim Brewer

A couple years ago, some strange, weed-like grass popped up in our back yard. I’m pretty sure it’s an invasive plant called Dallis Grass. I see it on golf courses, sometimes, on tee boxes, fairways and occasionally greens. The stuff grows in coarse clumps. It’s nasty. I don’t know where it came from or how it got there, but I wanted it gone. Normally, I don’t mind a few weeds I my yard. In … [Read more...]
