Filet of Cabbage

September 28, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I bet not many home chefs filet a head of cabbage, but I am now doing just that. Let me explain. One of our favorite places to eat out is Bubba’s Restaurant in Virginia Beach. The ambience, overlooking the Lynnnhaven Inlet, is unrivaled and the seafood is beyond delicious. But something else has always been special at this eatery – the coleslaw. It comes finely shredded with a little slaw … [Read more...]

The Art of the Putt

September 28, 2017 by Jim Brewer

My putting has gone south. Vamoose. Adios. See ya’ later. Staring down a foot-foot putt has been like challenging a grizzly bear on a mountain trail and guess who wins? The four-foot putt. When in doubt, “Ask a pro”, is pretty good advice, so I am repeating an article I did some 8 years ago when I interviewed Daryl Daughtry, the PGA Pro at Rivanna Resort. Here goes and I hope I … [Read more...]

Steak Knives and Other Freebies

September 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

We have a single steak knife in our kitchen that moved with me to Charlottesville when I set up my apartment in 1967. My mom had given me some extra dishes, pots, pans and linens to get started. I originally had 4 steak knives but three have left the premises. Only one remains. Those original steak knives came from a gas station giveaway back in the 1950s. Fill up your tank and get a free steak … [Read more...]

Sighting-in Ranges Now Open

September 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I’m not sure why, but the last time I tried sighting in my 30:06 rifle in my backyard, the neighbors were quite perturbed. They said it rattled their china cabinets and chipped paint off the ceilings. I’m kidding of course. My back yard is only 150 feet long and you need way more that that to sight in a high powered weapon. But where do you go if you don’t belong to a rifle or hunt club when … [Read more...]

“As Seen On TV” Brownies

September 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I have an entire shelf in my basement devoted to items I have bought “As Seen On TV.” Somehow all these gizmos look good when the TV “carnies” are hustling the snake oil, but when you get them, they often don’t cut the mustard. It took me three days to chip the splattered egg from the inside of my microwave oven after trying my “As Seen On TV Egg Poacher”, for example. However, when we were in … [Read more...]

Bees Love Sedum Autumn Joy

September 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

“Come look at all the bees!” my wife had called. “What kind of bees?” I asked, wanting to make sure this backyard visit was worth missing part of the football game I was watching. “Honey bees?” she exclaimed. And they were! Real live honeybees, by the dozens, flitting their way between blooms on what was for us at that time an unidentified flowering plant. Our son Jimmie had given us … [Read more...]

What a Floozie

September 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

(Ed. Note. Everybody likes pies. Especially yours truly. I am, in fact, the president of a growing organization called “There is no such thing a bad pie” club. Anyway, a year or so back Sherman Shifflett wrote this piece on a pie shop out his way. It is worth reprinting.)   By Sherman Shifflett A couple of years ago the co-owners of Obrigado’s Restaurant in Louisa, decided to open a … [Read more...]

Peninsula Report

September 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Ken Neill, III   Tautog catches have been very good for those targeting sheepshead at the CBBT. There are lots of small striped bass in the bay. Last fall, they were mostly too small to keep. This fall, there will be numerous 20-plus inch available. We are having a very good spot run. Nice spot are being caught in all of the rivers and inlets. Speckled trout and puppy drum are on … [Read more...]

Fish Turning On

September 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The best bite of the entire year in fresh water often comes with the first few downward ticks of the thermometer. Instincts tell fish that their meals could be few and far between when winter arrives if for no other reason than it’s just too cold to chase bait. So don’t put those rods and reels away just yet. Lots of fish are biting!   Chickahominy River There is lots of striper … [Read more...]
