Melon-Choly

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I like a little fruit for breakfast – blueberries, strawberries, bananas and especially cantaloupes. But I haven’t had even a decent cantaloupe all year long. I’ll see them in the produce department - $3.99 with card – and the cards taste better. They are tasteless and basically inedible. Grocery stores wouldn’t sell you a steak that was inedible, or a half-gallon of milk or a … [Read more...]

National Park Road Trip

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Lee Walker   (With the dog days of summer upon us, it’s time to head for the mountains. The Shenandoah Mountains. Lee Walker suggests these trips for beauty and great fishing.)   Day 1 Morning: The Hughes River Start your day early in the morning, driving about 40 minutes from Jollette to the Hughes River. You can access some of the best spots on the 14-mile long Hughes via … [Read more...]

Blackwater Endangered Species

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

VDGIF biologists returned to sample the acidic, dark-water swamps and beaver ponds in southeast Virginia. Their quarry was a two-inch long member of the bass family and a state endangered species known as the Blackbanded Sunfish (Enneachanthus chatedon). This sunfish prefers shallow portions of ponds that are thick with submerged aquatic vegetation – bladderwort, water milfoil, and … [Read more...]

Virginia Saltwater Action

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Ken Neill, III   The bluefin tuna that were hanging on the Fingers seem to have moved on. They have been replaced by yellowfin tuna in the 40-pound class. Dolphin and some wahoo are also being caught at the Fingers. More billfish are showing up out around 100 fathoms. There are amberjack at the southern towers. Spadefish are at the Chesapeake Light Tower and over most of the coastal … [Read more...]

Chickahominy Cats

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Thirty years ago, the Rappahannock River was noted as Virginia’s premiere catfish river. The Rapp drew wide numbers of tourists looking for that 30 or 40 pounder. But then, the James got hot with monster cats pulled in near Hopewell. Then it was Buggs Island producing fish in excess of 100 pounds. But throughout all that, the Chickahominy River remains a top spot for catfish large and … [Read more...]

Uncle Sidney

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Looking back over the years, is there a single Boomer who didn’t have a strange – or let’s say “interesting” - relative or two. I sure did. One that comes immediately to mind was Uncle Sidney. Uncle Sidney was my grandmother’s (Mama Ida) younger brother. She was a Davis and had three sisters - Ann, Pearl and Topsy, and two brothers, Arthur and Sidney. The family lost their mother soon after Topsy, … [Read more...]

A Journey to the Promised Land

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

For me, a 25 handicapper - even with mulligans - the Promised Land is but a fleeting illusion. They say it’s beautiful, lush and a joy to walk upon. It brings great comfort to all those who find it and enjoy its privileges. I have read much about the Promised Land – not only in the Bible, but also in Golf Digest. The Promised Land I speak of, of course, is the fairway. In the world of … [Read more...]

Bunnies and Beans

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

A few weeks back, Nancy and I saw a mother rabbit building her nest against our backyard fence. Nancy checked the nest daily, and Voilà! One day they were there. Four, tiny baby bunnies. They stayed on or near the nest – with regular visits from Mom – for about a week, then left. Well, all but one left. One of the little fellows decided he liked our back yard just fine. No cats, no dogs and his … [Read more...]

Triple Chocolate Mess

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I found a recipe in one of my many cherished Church Cookbooks that looked interesting – especially if M7Ms, Reese’s Cups, chocolate pie and candies are your thing. Choco-holics, you know who you are. My thought on deserts are that if they don’t have chocolate in them, why bother? Just have another helping of potatoes. But this recipe caught my eye – Triple Chocolate Mess? They named it … [Read more...]

Eatin’ Out at Wegman’s?

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Wegman’s is a grocery store, not a restaurant. Isn’t it? Actually, Wegman’s is a grocery store with a restaurant inside. Nancy and I were in that area of town last Sunday and stopped by to check out the new store (it was my first visit) and since it was lunchtime, we went to their restaurant and ordered food and drinks. Wegman’s Food Markets, Inc. is a privately held American supermarket chain … [Read more...]
