Birds Need Water

October 26, 2017 by Jim Brewer

We’re in a drought; at least we are here in Central Virginia. Albemarle County officials said they’d line us all up in a firing squad if they caught us watering our gardens or lawns. Fortunately, we had an inch of ran Tuesday night, which helped, but we’re still in a drought. The reservoir looks like Moses parted it and left it half empty. During dry weather, everybody worries about lawns and … [Read more...]

Time Was!

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

What time is it? I don’t know. I don’t have my phone with me. Phone? Where’s your watch? What’s a watch? Time was, everyone wore a watch. A right of passage for a young girl or boy was their first watch. It was a big deal. I think I was 7 when I got my first watch. It was an inexpensive stopwatch. I was constantly stopping and starting the watch, which also reset the time. So I never … [Read more...]

How Low Can You Go?

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The trout streams are low and clear, the rivers are low and clear, and the lakes are the same – low and clear, but there are fish to be caught. The rules for fishing in low water are fairly simple – use lighter line, smaller lures and flies, fish further from your target and if you have a blaze orange fishing cap – leave it in the car. Here’s what happening on the freshwater … [Read more...]

Good, Better, Best

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Just when you thought the fishing on the Outer Banks near Nags Head could not get better, it did.  Says Capt. Reese Stecher: “We caught a 10-fish striper limit this morning up to 25 inches. We’re still catching Red Drum and Speckled Trout as well. We lost the keeper-sized Stripers on the 12th., but caught plenty of small throwback fish. But we ended up clobbering the Drum. And we caught the … [Read more...]

Fall Golf at Swannanoa

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

When it comes to panoramic vistas on a Central Virginia golf course, all others come in no better than second when compared to the Swannanoa Country Club on Afton Mountain. From several vantage points, a player can scan the horizon and see the Blue Ridge, the Southwest and the Allegheny Mountains – all at the same time. And right now, the leaves are just beginning to change. As I have … [Read more...]

Wooden Sun

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Gas logs are an amazing addition to a home – when they are working, when you click the remote and the flame pops up. But when you have to get down on hands and knees, hold the pilot down and pray for ignition, they are not so much fun. About every two years, our gas logs throw a little temper tantrum (I suppose because dust, dirt and other stuff clogs the pilot and jets) and we make a call to … [Read more...]

Diggs Seafood Market

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

About 20 years ago, I was on a fishing trip to the Mattaponi River in West Point. The croakers were running and it was time to stock the freezer. There were four of us and our driver pulled into a seafood market when we arrived at West Point. I figured we would be buying bait, and we did, but we were also buying our lunch as it turns out, “Ever eaten Deviled Crabs from Diggs?” someone … [Read more...]

Old Fashioned Corn Pudding

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Recipes don’t have to be fancy or exotic to be good. Most comfort foods, in fact, are simple recipes, and it’s hard to beat comfort food, like old-fashioned corn pudding. This is a dish enjoyed by everyone and it tastes almost like a dessert. Corn pudding is easy to make and sure to please. I don’t know why we don’t have and enjoy this dish more often. Here’s how I make mine. First, I … [Read more...]

Great Balls of Milkweed!

October 19, 2017 by Jim Brewer

We had a most interesting plant in our yard this year. Nancy planted it in early summer and it survived the heat and prospered. We noticed as the tiny white blooms grew that ants flocked to the sweet smelling flowers, then bees, then hummingbirds. The plant is called – and I am not making this up – Hairy Balls. Hairy Balls (gomphocarpus physocarpus) is a milkweed plant, and as most know, … [Read more...]
