Summer Band Concerts Winding Down

August 3, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The Charlottesville Municipal Band is winding down what has been a busy summer schedule with an upcoming performance at The Paramount Theater on Tuesday, August 15 at 7:30. But please be reminded: An anonymous donor will now MATCH your financial gift to the Charlottesville Municipal Band. Through the end of this year, contributions up to $500,000 will in essence be doubled. A $50 … [Read more...]

The Eastern Towhee

August 3, 2017 by Jim Brewer

As best I know, I have never had any Towhees in my yard. I see them in my travels to the western part of Virginia, but I’ve never had one come to any of my feeders. They are pretty birds and most interesting. They look a little like a miniature Red Breasted Grosbeak, but with black, white and orange plumage. Concerning Towhees and other birds, I recently got this email from Sherman … [Read more...]

Lowery’s Seafood Restaurant

August 3, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I’m jealous. My friend, Sherman Shifflett sent me an email last week saying that since it was Ava’s birthday, he took his special lady clear down to Tappahannock to Lowery’s Seafood Restaurant to celebrate. Sherman lives in Louisa, so that’s a pretty long haul for a meal, but if you get the “hungries” for seafood, it’s hard to beat Lowery’s. On my way to a fishing trip on the … [Read more...]

Chicken Little

August 3, 2017 by Jim Brewer

When it comes to chicken, size matters. But in this case, the smaller, the better. When I was about 14, I spent the night with a classmate, Larry McDaniel, whose family owned a small farm on Muddy Creek Mountain, just outside Lewisburg, WV. Larry and I were going squirrel hunting early the next morning, so I spent the night and ate with his family the night before. For dinner, … [Read more...]

A Shenandoah Valley Road Trip

July 27, 2017 by Jim Brewer

(WOOPS Last week I punched the wrong button on my computer and CvilleBuzz went up on the web site, but it didn’t go out in the mailing. Here it is again, with a couple additions.)   Nancy and I went to see a camper van last Sunday. We need one of these like a hole in the head, but we’ve always had fun looking at campers and campgrounds, dating back some 40 years. The camper was … [Read more...]

“Hobe” Wan Kenobi

July 27, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Is there anything that smells more delightful than a big pot of green beans cooking on a stove? Hardly. But I think I have happened upon the best seasoning ever for green beans. String beans are good with just a little salt and pepper, but a splash of bacon grease or a slab of fat back makes the flavors come alive. Still, both those seasonings can be a little greasy and sometimes … [Read more...]

Sandwiches In Waxed Paper

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I saw a picture of a sandwich wrapped in waxed paper recently that took me back to the 1950’s and brown bag lunches. As an elementary student, sometimes I ate in the cafeteria, assuming someone had an available quarter, but usually Mom would pack my lunch – a cookie, an apple and a sandwich wrapped in waxed paper. I remember watching the early commercials of Reynolds’s Waxed Paper … [Read more...]

A Reminder: Lights Out for Special Savings

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I spend a good bit of my time at Lights Out, a discount lighting store in Ruckersville. When there are no customers, I type. When customers come in, I sell, and we have the best bargains going in the lighting business. Each January, my wife Nancy and I go to the Dallas market. She may buy 100 new fixtures for her showroom, Nancy B’s House of Lights. When they come in, we take down … [Read more...]

Raising Frogs

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

All I know about frogs would fill a book about the size of Nancy Pelosi’s new book on “Avoiding Botox”. Yet, I am a frog-ladite. I love the little amphibians. We have a small lily pond with pads and flowers, and occasionally a frog will show up out of the blue. This spring, dozens and dozens of tiny tadpoles materialized in the pond and we have no idea who the father was or the … [Read more...]

Seven Layer Bars

July 20, 2017 by Jim Brewer

My mom used to make Seven Layer Bars, especially if company was coming. These sweet morsels are to die for – rich, creamy, chocolaty and delicious. I thought about Mom and those bars recently and decided to make a batch for some kids I cook for. As expected, each and every one was wolfed down and an order is now on the table for more, any time I want to make a batch. Seven Layer … [Read more...]
