Crappie Time at Lake Orange

August 17, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Perhaps fall is just around the corner, or at least the Lake Orange crappie think it may be. It was a good week for the speckled slabs at Orange. Successful anglers dunked minnows in 10 to 12 foot depths for some nice stringers of fish. Darrell Kennedy at Anglers Landing says the water temperature is in the upper 70s to lower 80s and the lake is stained. Bass are being caught on … [Read more...]

Duck Populations Remain High

August 17, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported that overall duck numbers remain high. Total populations were estimated at 47.3 million breeding ducks in the traditional survey area, which is similar to last year’s estimate of 48.4 million and is 34 percent above the 1955-2016 long-term average. The projected mallard fall flight index is 12.9 million birds, similar to the 2016 estimate of … [Read more...]

Green, Green: It’s Green They Say

August 17, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Rabbits eat beans, raccoons eat tomatoes, and squash borers eat squash plants. What’s a backyard gardener to do? This one planted a mess of greens last week, three messes, actually – collards, turnip greens and spinach. Funny, but my critters don’t seem to eat greens. But I sure do. In fact, I just came back from North Carolina with three packs of Hobe’s Country Ham Skins, a perfect … [Read more...]

Nancy’s Tortellini Surprise

August 17, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Longtime reader and subscriber of CvilleBuzz, Nancy Jackson of Urbana, says she came up with a concoction sure to please. It certainly pleased her husband Mike, so much so that he wanted it again within five days of his first sampling. Nancy is like many cooks – she likes to experiment. Here’s what she came up with on a recent culinary adventure. “I just cooked a ‘made-up’ recipe, as many of … [Read more...]

Tavern on the Rail

August 17, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Mineral, Virginia may be one of the least likely places you’d expect to find a fine eating establishment, but according to Sherman Shifflett, Tavern on the Rail, located about ten miles northeast of Mineral and not far from the power plant, is a nuclear option for dining out. Says Sherman, “Last Saturday afternoon, Ava and I and another couple had dinner at Tavern on the Rail in rural … [Read more...]

Double Your Impact

August 17, 2017 by Jim Brewer

An anonymous donor will now MATCH your financial gift to the Charlottesville Municipal Band. Through the end of this year, contributions up to $500,000 will in essence be doubled. A $50 gift becomes $100. A $1,000 contribution becomes $2,000. With these gifts, it is hoped that the band will be able to create an endowment sufficient to carry them well into their second century with … [Read more...]

Diamond Zoysia

August 17, 2017 by Jim Brewer

We were on a short vacation to Lake Norman near Charlotte last weekend and I had a chance to play three rounds of golf – two at Mallard Head Country Club in Mooresville and one at Trump National Charlotte. I had played Mallard Head before at a family reunion tournament but they had closed the course in June when we normally play. They were in process of re-doing all the greens. Now … [Read more...]

What Did You Say?

August 10, 2017 by Jim Brewer

If you live long enough, two things will happen. First, you’ll get arthritis as the old joints begin to wear out. It’s sorta like an automobile engine at 250,000 miles when it’s metal on metal, but in our case, it’s bone on bone. The second thing that will happen is that your hearing will also begin to diminish. Either that or it’s that other people all begin to mumble at exactly the … [Read more...]

TREND REPORT

August 10, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Markets in spring and summer of this year speak of warmer tones like brushed brass, antique gold and gold leafing. Pastels such as Lavender, Robin’s Egg Blue and Pink are hot, hot, hot. The Burnt Orange as seen in the fall and changing leaves was another color to be noticed. Small space living has had a great impact as products in the furniture markets display smaller items for these … [Read more...]

Steady Flounder Action

August 10, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Julie Ball Flounder action will remain steady though August, with nice fish being caught from all over the lower Bay waters. Live baiters are experiencing good results along the Bay Bridge Tunnel, especially near the tubes at the 1st, 3rd, and 4th islands. Jigging along the pilings and tubes near the islands is also productive. Keeper fish are being caught in both Lynnhaven and … [Read more...]
