A Monster 64-pounder

December 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

They’re here all right – big stripers. A 64-pounder was brought to scales last week and numerous fish in the 50-pound class are showing as well in the lower Bay. Chris Bait & Tackle at Kiptopeke says that most fish are being caught in the Buoy 52-54 area with others fishing towards Tangier. “We have had a few fish off Cape Charles, as well.” Chris said. The fish are scattered but … [Read more...]

My Fort Apache

December 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

One of the great toys of my youth was a Fort Apache Playset. My parents, or Santa Claus, I don’t remember which, gave me my first Fort Apache when I was 7 or 8. I spent hours and hours in my room positioning cavalry soldiers along the fort’s walls to defend against the attacking Indians. The set came in a tin box with sections of the fort wall along with cavalry men, horses, Indians, … [Read more...]

More Chickahominy Crappie

December 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-514-1486) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the high 40’s to low 50’s in the main lake and in the
major creeks on Wednesday. Most crappie were on drop-offs and in the
main lake channels, especially near wood cover. Activity was fluctuating, and when
active, crappie … [Read more...]

The Big Rockfish Are Here

December 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Chris Bait & Tackle on the Eastern Shore says the wait is over. The Big Mamas are in the Bay and some nice fish are coming to scales. The big stripers have shown around Plantation Light and the area between the CBBT and Cape Charles. The larger fish are taking drifted live eels. Anglers trolling the oceanfront for ocean stripers, do not be surprised by a giant blue fin tuna … [Read more...]

While Shepherds Watched, Part II

December 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Tending Special Sheep   Amos, his father Benjamin and his uncle Shimron had just finished driving their sheep herd some ten miles to the outskirts of Bethlehem. Two other groups of shepherds were using the same ancient fold erected from stones as the shepherds settled into their open quarters that cold, clear winter night. Amos, a young man of 14, had placed his bedding at the … [Read more...]

Suet, A Winter Must for Birds

December 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I often feed my backyard feathered friends suet during the winter. One day I was at Kroger’s and saw a big, fat wad of “suet” in the meat department and I bought it and hung it in the backyard. “The birds will love this!” Or so I thought. I noticed a few buzzards circling overhead but no actual birds landed on, much less ate any of my genuine suet. Suet by definition is the raw, hard fat of … [Read more...]

Jefferson Coin Shop

December 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Recently, we had the unfortunate duty of settling and liquidating an estate of a family member. It was a long and tedious process, but with the help of family and friends and some great local businesses, it went rather smoothely. One of the businesses involved, Jefferson Coin, was truly noteworthy. When ordinary people sell gold, silver or valuables, they really rely on the integrity of the … [Read more...]

Eye of Round Roast

December 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The eye of the round in roast form is one of the best values of all cuts in the meat department. The eye of round has a wonderful flavor, but it’s tough, plain and simple. There is an answer, however, for tough cuts like the eye or round. Cook it at a high temperature to seal in the juices and slice it razor thin. Unfortunately for me – being one of the world’s worst knife sharpeners … [Read more...]

A Gayle’s Ham For Christmas

December 7, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Hams make a great Christmas gift, and there will be lots of them exchanged later this month - Kite Hams, Turner Hams, Smithfield and the like. But the best ham of all in my opinion, and the most reasonably priced, is a Gayle’s Ham. I wouldn’t trade a Gayle for any of the above. I discovered Gayle’s Hams a number of years ago in my travels to and from the Harrisonburg area. Gayle’s Market is a … [Read more...]

Remembering Great Christmas Specials

November 30, 2017 by Jim Brewer

One thing I dearly miss from our Boomer years is a December full of great Christmas specials on TV. This was entertainment at its finest – top stars, top acts, great music, great comedy and classic cartoons. In the 1950’s and 60’s, variety shows dominated the airwaves. Singers with top hits appeared regularly and comedians like Bob Newhart and Jonathan Winters left us in stitches as Hollywood … [Read more...]
