Best Bet? Trout Fishing

January 16, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The outdoor forecast has turned into the same-old, same-old and will continue for a few weeks, unless we get a sudden surge in temperatures. The diehards on the larger lakes are catching some bass, especially Lake Anna where deep dropping finesse bait will attract an occasional strike. The Chickahominy Lake continues to give up a few bass, but the crappie bite has slowed. It’s still too cold … [Read more...]

Do Your Best

January 11, 2018 by Jim Brewer

What Boomer can ever forget that first uniform of his or her youth, likely from being a member of a Cub Scout or Brownie troop. I clearly recall that royal blue shirt with the bright yellow kerchief, my Cub Scout uniform in 4th grade. As a new scout recruit, I was fascinated by the badges and emblems, and I wanted as many as I could pin or have Mom sew on my uniform. They didn’t cost … [Read more...]

A Golf Ball for Duffers

January 11, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The golf pros endorse this ball or that one because they perform better on the greens. The greens? When the pros speak of greens, they mean hitting the ball close to the flagstick on no worse than the second shot. It sometimes takes me that many to get to ladies tees. They also may suggest another brand because it goes high, spins on command, rolls for a hundred yards after it lands and … [Read more...]

Soup’s On

January 11, 2018 by Jim Brewer

When the thermometer gets stuck under 10 degrees as it did a couple times last weekend, it’s soup time. Course, soup is always good, but especially so when it’s so cold that iguanas are falling out of trees in Florida. Plus, soups and stews are among the easiest meals of all to prepare. If you have a crockpot and stuff in the refrigerator, you’ve got the makings of stew. I am … [Read more...]

The Loyal Titmouse

January 11, 2018 by Jim Brewer

My backyard bird friends come and go. Robins, for example, will be packed in my yard like sardines one week and disappear the next. Even my resident bluebirds take a leave of absence, usually after the last brood has hatched. But the titmice rarely leave. They hang around from winter to spring, from summer to fall. They are lovely and loyal little birds. I noticed a pair at my feeder … [Read more...]

Lock In On Geese

January 11, 2018 by Jim Brewer

When it’s a high in the twenties – in the daytime - it takes a little of the edge off going fishing, unless you have a death wish. Striper season in the bay has ended. Deer season is over. So what’s an outdoorsman to do during the awful weeks lying ahead? Well, you can hunt ducks until January 28, you can pretend there are actually grouse somewhere in the mountains and try that, or – … [Read more...]

LIGHTING TRENDS

January 11, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer   Happy New Year from Nancy B’s House of Lights! The past year seems to have flown by and the New Year is off to an exciting leap. We saw many changes in the lighting industry in 2017, especially the acceptance, confidence and use of LED lighting (light-emitting diodes). We now know we can rely on the color temperatures (Kelvins) of LED’s to make food look appetizing and … [Read more...]

Saltwater Action Slowing Down

January 11, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Virginia Saltwater Striper season is closed in the bay and so far, no reports of stripers off Virginia Beach. Some puppy drum were caught at Rudee Inlet. Black sea bass and blueline tilefish are being caught on the deep ocean wrecks off Virginia Beach.   Outer Banks Not much to report at Nags Head. Few are fishing and some boats were iced up in port. At Hatteras, there … [Read more...]

It’s Only A Putt

January 4, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The green is smooth, not a blemish in sight. It even looks relatively flat. The ball is perfectly still. The wind isn’t blowing. There is no glare from the sun. It’s big hole and a little ball. It’s only 5 feet. How hard can it be? When it comes to putting, it’s damned hard - one of the most difficult things an adult male will ever be asked to do – next to shopping with your wife for a dress that … [Read more...]
