Playing Possum

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I had an interesting visitor to my backyard early this morning – a possum. I’m sure he is a frequent visitor, but only after dark. It’s rare to see a possum in the daytime, unless it’s in the form of a flattened carcass on the side of the road. Possums are not very good road-crossers. This was a big possum, nice and fat, and would probably have made a nice roast, if you’re into possum meat. … [Read more...]

Two Species of Cobia?

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Last week, CvilleBuzz printed a release from the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council on Cobia Management. The release indicated that there are two stocks of cobia and that the cobia in federal waters off the east coast of Florida are considered part of the Gulf of Mexico migratory stock. Capt. Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Fishing at Nags Head staunchly disagrees. Says Reese: … [Read more...]

Yummy Sausage Rolls

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By James Friend Dickerson   In 1999 we traveled through Scotland, touring the country and visiting Masonic Lodges. After many Lodge meetings, we enjoyed the time of Harmony (food, drink, music, and spirited conversation). Among my favorite food items during Harmony were the sausage rolls.  When Jen Christenson made her sausage rolls using an Australian recipe, they were just like the … [Read more...]

Lightovation Market in Dallas

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer   Returning from the Lightovation Market in Dallas last week, we found many new products to enhance anyone’s pallet. While the orbs are still hot, clear glass and clear seeded glass are tipping the scales. Chandeliers, bath fixtures, pendants, fan light kits and exterior fixtures are all becoming statement pieces. New materials for exterior fixtures abound assuring … [Read more...]

Deep Creatures

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Ken Neill   We got out yesterday and did some bottom fishing. As expected, the spiny dogfish were bad, especially on the south side of the canyon while trying for golden tilefish. On the north wall of the canyon, we caught a lot of smooth dogfish…like the canyon was a dividing line. We also caught a dogfish that seemed almost a cross between the two. More body type and spots like … [Read more...]

Lake Anna News

January 25, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Numerous bass in the 6 and 7 pound class are coming to the scales at Anna Point Marina. Some nice crappie, too. Last month, Tommy Lambert weighed in a slab-size crappie at 2 pounds, 2 ounces. The crappie are deep, 12 to 18 feet, but if you can get a shiner down to them, they’ll bite. Stripers are busting shad from the Rt. 1 Bridge to the Splits. Tommy Lambert 2 Pounds 2 … [Read more...]

Basketball – A Different Game

January 16, 2018 by Jim Brewer

They call it basketball. It’s on TV all the time, but it isn’t the same basketball Boomers recall. There was once a time, you see, when basketball was a civil sport. If there was the slightest contact, somebody got called for a foul. Not anymore. Today, they grab each other, push each other, bite each other, take a flying leap and land on one another and it’s “incidental contact.” On numerous … [Read more...]

Buzzards, Buzzards, Everywhere.

January 16, 2018 by Jim Brewer

It’s been a good year for buzzards. When deer get careless and don’t look both ways before they cross the road, it means the buzzards dine in style. And buzzards do us a great service. They keep carrion to a minimum. But I worry a little about the surge in black buzzards, or black vultures as they re also called. In Virginia, we have two types of vultures/buzzards, the more common turkey … [Read more...]

Obrigado’s In Louisa

January 16, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I got an interesting email last week raving about eating beets at a local restaurant. Beets? Either these were amazing beets or maybe that was the best the restaurant had to offer? Sherman Shifflett, who ate there with Ava, said the beets were as good as advertised and the meal – at Obrigado’s in Louisa - was sensational. Said Sherman: “I don't know if you like beets or not.  We grew them in … [Read more...]

Comfort Food

January 16, 2018 by Jim Brewer

When it’s cold outside and spitting snow, there is nothing like Comfort Food to chase away those winter demons. Comfort Food is a loose term meaning carb-loaded food that’s easy to make, guaranteed to fill your belly and make you fat. But it tastes so good! Stuff like meat loaf, mac and cheese, a pot roast and chicken stew easily qualify as charter members of the Comfort Food category. I cooked … [Read more...]
