A Guide to the Eastern Shore

June 28, 2018 by Jim Brewer

We first came to the Eastern Shore of Virginia in 1968. To save what was then a $5 toll fee across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, we drove to all the way to Annapolis and came down Rt. 13. Five bucks was a lot of money back then, but it was about an 8 hour drive. We’ll never do that again. During our stay, we camped in a tent at Tom’s Cove on Chincoteague Island. We slept on the ground in … [Read more...]

Whatever Will I Do?

June 28, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Once on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, the best thing to do is nothing. Just relax and enjoy the laid back atmosphere and scenery. Kicking back and relaxing is the number one activity for all us “shore-birds. The number two activity is best accomplished with a fishing rod and reel. There are lots and lots of great fishing opportunities. The best way to explore the fishing grounds along the … [Read more...]

Eating Out on the Eastern Shore

June 28, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I gained five and a half pounds in three days. The food is really good on the Eastern Shore, maybe too good. But if you’re traveling to get to the Eastern Shore, you simply must stop at Bubba’s Restaurant on Shore Drive at Virginia Beach. It’s just a couple miles from Rt. 13 that goes across the tunnel, but it’s well worth your time. Bubba’s is perhaps our favorite restaurant anywhere. The … [Read more...]

Marinated Cube Steaks

June 28, 2018 by Jim Brewer

When you go to the beach and eat fried seafood and French fries practically every night, you’ll gain weight. Trust me. I gained 5 ½ pounds in three days. Back to chicken and broiled fish, I suppose. But, you know, lean beef, like round steak or flank steak, isn’t that fattening. It’s the 12-ounce marbled rib-eyes that will hurt you. On my first trip to the grocery store since my near-death … [Read more...]

Shaver’s Music Shop

June 28, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The hands-down most popular retail establishment in Lewisburg in the 1950’s was Shaver’s Music Shop on Washington Street. Kids made daily or almost daily visits to the small store to see if their favorite record had arrived or if there was a new hit out that they wanted to hear. Burr Shaver, a talented local musician, ran the shop and was one of the best salesmen in the history of Greenbrier … [Read more...]

The Pioneer Drug Store

June 21, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Not long after I moved to Lewisburg, I made friends with a classmate, Dave Gladwell. Dave’s dad, Arthur Gladwell, was the town mayor and owner of Bee Jewelry. Dave and I hit it off immediately and are close friends to this day. Dave, however, was a picky eater. Green vegetables and fresh fruit were not among his major food groups. Since the Lewisburg School Cafeteria served lots of fruits and … [Read more...]

Happy Birthday!

June 21, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Today, June 22, is my wife Nancy’s birthday. And it’s a special one. To celebrate, and as you are reading this, we are off to the Eastern Shore for three days of fun and relaxation. On our way, we will stop at Bubba’s in Virginia Beach and eat lunch right on the water at Lynnhaven. We may drive up to Chincoteague one day and we will certainly eat a meal of two at Stingray’s. We might even dunk a … [Read more...]
