Patio Gardens

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Don’t have space for a garden, you say? Do you have a patio or driveway that gets some sun? Then you have space for a great garden. This spring, my wife Nancy decided to plant a patio garden. She had a number of large wooden and pottery planters, and filled them with garden soil, added a little fertilizer and we have already been enjoying the fruits of her labor while my in-ground garden is … [Read more...]

Jimmy O and CrossKeys

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Our favorite musician and our favorite winery destination? That’s a hard combination to beat, and Jimmy O will be strumming his guitar and playing endangered (oldies) music for a CrossKeys Vineyard audience this Sunday. Cross Keys, located near Weyer’s Cave in the Shenandoah Valley, is noted for terrific Sunday Brunches artfully prepared by Chef Dexter Burgess (formerly with The Greenbrier). … [Read more...]

Cobia and Large Flounder Making Waves

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Cobia, Cobia, Cobia! There are lots of big ones in the lower bay, some topping 70 pounds. Anglers are chumming up fish and then using live eels or croakers as bait. Some of the best action is coming from York Spit and the Windmill Bar area. There is still plenty of large red drum around. Occasionally sight casters are finding schools on the surface and casting to them. Other reds are being … [Read more...]

New State Record Flathead Catfish

July 19, 2018 by Jim Brewer

It’s now official. Jeffrey E. Dill boated a 68 pound, 12 ounce flathead catfish on May 25 at Lake Smith, setting a new record for that species in Virginia. Blue catfish typically run larger, but a 68-12 flathead is nothing to sneeze at. Lake Smith, in Norfolk, is located across Northampton Boulevard from the Little Creek side of Lake Whitehurst. The lake’s 193 acres average only five feet in … [Read more...]

Fill ‘er Up?

July 12, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Another in a series of growing up in Lewisburg, WV in the 1950’s, a wonderful town and a great time and place to be young)   There were real service stations in Lewisburg when I was a boy. They pumped gasoline and offered genuine service. As I recall, we had just two in the 1950’s, an Esso station on Washington Street, down and across from the post office, and another at the corner of … [Read more...]

Blue Wing Frog

July 12, 2018 by Jim Brewer

(Ed. Note. If you ever have a good – or even bad – experience at a restaurant, let us know, even out of town. You never know where readers of CvilleBuzz may go out to eat.)   My fellow restaurant scout, Sherman Shifflett, found another interesting “Eatin’ Out” spot over the Fourth of July. It’s called Blue Wing Frog and you certainly don’t run into those every day. Here’s what … [Read more...]

Neat Stuff: Patio Fans

July 12, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Nancy and I are blessed with a sprawling, tree-shaded patio in our backyard. Since the grass wouldn’t grow among all the tree roots, we poured concrete and created a nice outdoor room, which we thoroughly enjoy. But! Here comes summer and 90 degree weather, which makes sitting outside – even in the shade – not so enjoyable. Last Christmas, Nancy had the good sense to put an outdoor fan on … [Read more...]

Cuke It Out

July 12, 2018 by Jim Brewer

My wife Nancy and I are having a cucumber growing competition this summer and, so far, she’s way ahead. She planted three or four vines on the carport in large pots and has put up a couple 7 pound pickle batches so far. Nancy planted smaller, pickling cucumbers, which took off right away. I, on the other hand, planted Burpless cucumbers and just picked the first ones last week. These are big … [Read more...]

Company BBQ

July 12, 2018 by Jim Brewer

There were going to be about 20 people for dinner on the first night of our Family Reunion gathering. Nancy and I signed up to prepare the meal and we chose BBQ, and no store-bought BBQ. It had to be the real thing. Most think of hickory smoking when it comes to making a batch of BBQ, but I think the method below is better. It brings out the pure, sweet, natural taste of a slow cooked shoulder, … [Read more...]

Birds On a Golf Course

July 12, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I played golf 4 times at Lake Norman last week. Two days were stifling hot and two days were glorious. I hit a few good shots and I hit lots of bad ones. My family reunion team ended up losing to “Darth” Mathera (my brother-in-law) and his gang by 5 strokes, but the next day, I beat Darth by one stroke in a head-to-head match at Trump National, so good sometimes overcomes evil. But while I was … [Read more...]
