For my recent birthday, my wife Nancy gave me a gift certificate to the Clifton Inn Restaurant. It was more like a “down payment” to what I now consider the finest restaurant in Charlottesville. Clifton is a little pricey, but you only turn 39 once, right? Nancy had been there once before, but this was my first experience. We sat at the Chef’s Table, basically in the kitchen, observing every … [Read more...]
Cold Water Boating: Be Safe
By Bruce Ingram The most dangerous incident of my paddling career occurred on the James River when a friend and I overturned in his canoe. Earlier, my water temperature gauge had registered 54 degrees and the air temperature 65 degrees. When I fell in, I felt as if a sledge hammer had struck my chest, and my buddy and I struggled to swim to shore – losing most of our gear. That day, the air … [Read more...]
Pizza Stuffed Shells
Is there anybody who doesn’t like pizza? If so, I’ve never met this strange person. Pizza is just good stuff. Recently, I saw a recipe idea for Pizza Stuffed Shells and I knew that the children of a family I do a little cooking for would love this dish. They did. It turned out great. This is a dish that can be assembled ahead and stored in the fridge, or you can whip it together in … [Read more...]
Suet Time
My two suet feeders have been getting more and more attention since the weather got cold. They were quite popular last week with 9 inches of snow on the ground and nothing much to eat except for my feeders and the seeds I scattered. I saw nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, sparrows, chickadees, titmice and wrens squeezing in and out of the suet cages. They say cardinals, … [Read more...]

Lucky Buck Runs Out of Luck
By Sherman Shifflett Twice the “Lucky Buck” had dodged the bullet. Saved by unique circumstances after coming within range. But the "Lucky Buck" finally ran out of luck. I tagged him Wednesday afternoon before dark. I got some backstrap in my freezer and am now waiting for a good day to cook some "deer nuggets." I decided to use a different tree stand. The "Lucky Buck" had dodged … [Read more...]
A Memorable Christmas
By Charles Conway Crenshaw When I think of Christmas past, 1943 is the one that comes to mind. It was a memorable Christmas. World War II had started. My dad was driving the city bus in Charlottesville. At that time the only bus route was from Belmont, up Main Street and Jefferson Park Avenue to Fry’s Spring and return. Most families had only one automobile and some depended on … [Read more...]
Swordfish and More Big Stripers
The weather has been a hindrance on many days, but Virginia’s saltwater anglers remain focused on an excellent striper season. A number of 40 to 60-pounders have hit the scales. Most of these large fish are coming from the eastern side of the Bay, Plantation Light to Cape Charles, where boats are drifting and slow trolling with eels. School-sized rockfish are also available for anglers casting … [Read more...]
Oh, Christmas Tree
We put up our Christmas tree exactly one week before Christmas, and we took it down one week after. Never earlier, never later. It was tradition in our family when we lived in Lewisburg in the 1950’s. Selecting the tree was another tradition. On the appointed day, everyone piled in our car, a fifty-something Pontiac and headed for Bud Simm’s Esso Station, one of only a handful of places that … [Read more...]
Merry Christmas and Thank You!
By Nancy Brewer As we reflect on 2018 at Nancy B’s House of Lights and take some time to gather our thoughts, we are grateful for yet another year but are filled with a bit of sadness saying goodbye to 2018. However, looking forward to the new year with awe, anticipation and excitement is most uplifting. At Nancy B’s, we are most appreciative to our builders, architects, … [Read more...]
