Eggs ‘n Things for Breakfast

January 3, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I know of a great place to eat breakfast, maybe the best breakfast you’ve ever eaten. Trouble is, you have to go to Waikiki Beach to eat there. But there are worse things, right? When Nancy and I went on our Hawaiian Cruise last March, our daughter Laura insisted that we eat breakfast at a place called Eggs ‘n Things. They had a breakfast bar set up in our hotel, but on the strength of Laura’s … [Read more...]

Striper Season Closed in Bay, Open in the Ocean

January 3, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Big rockfish continued to hit the scales all the way through the season ending on Dec. 31. One big female topped 65 pounds. Most of the action was coming from the eastside of the Bay, between Cape Charles and the ocean. The majority of the big fish were caught with live eels. The Virginia coastal season opened January 1st and runs through March 31st. The ocean season minimum size limit is 28 … [Read more...]

I Miss TV Guide

December 27, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I miss seeing the test pattern in the early morning hours and I miss hearing the National Anthem played each night at the end of broadcasting. I miss seeing Dave Garroway on the Today Show and I miss the zany comics on the Steve Allen Show – Louis Nye, Tom Poston and Bill Dana (Jose Jimenez). I miss the Maxwell House commercials and the smell of hot tubes within the TV set. I miss the … [Read more...]

The Silver Pig for Great BBQ

December 27, 2018 by Jim Brewer

In my opinion, there are only a handful of restaurants in all of Virginia that makes barbeque worth stopping by for. I guess I’m a little spoiled, though, raised on North Carolina barbeque. Once you eat that – basically slow cooked pork with vinegar and pepper – the stuff they call BBQ in Virginia is just not up to par. It’s edible, but that’s it. One of the select few restaurants in the … [Read more...]

A Cardinal in the Snow

December 27, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Perhaps no outdoor scene in the world has been painted or photographed more often than a cardinal in the snow. That “cardinal red” framed with a back drop of pure white is simply stunning. Last week, during our surprise snow storm, I was treated to that scene and I couldn’t help but pause and admire the beauty of this special creature that graces our yard with his presence. Cardinals, Northern … [Read more...]

Save the Trees

December 27, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Like the Lorax, I speak for the trees, and this Lorax says don’t waste your Christmas tree – recycle it! Christmas is over. It’s time to un-decorate the tree, drag it out to the curb and let the trash guys do their thing. But not so fast! A Christmas tree has many uses after the holiday season is over. For one, it makes ideal cover for small birds as they face the coming winter. On … [Read more...]

Crazy Jane’s Salmon

December 27, 2018 by Jim Brewer

We always called it Crazy Jane’s, but it’s really Jane’s Crazy Mixed Up Salt. It has been a staple in our pantry for 50 years. My wife, Crazy Nancy, uses it to make garlic bread when we eat Italian. She slices almost all the way through a loaf of French or Italian bread, pours melted butter between the slices, then sprinkles the bread with garlic powder and a heavy shake of “Crazy Jane’s” Mixed Up … [Read more...]

The Legendary Campbell County Buck

December 27, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By Jeff Phillips   Most Virginia deer hunters consider November the magical month, but December 2018 has proven to be a remarkable Big Buck harvest month in our state, and Tom Harvey of Campbell County is a shining example, having his Big Buck wish list fulfilled on December 4th. Tom is an old school hunter spending most of his deer season with a bow in his hand, which includes both … [Read more...]

Puppies and Stripers

December 27, 2018 by Jim Brewer

In Virginia, big stripers are moving in from the ocean as the season draws to a close on New Year’s Day. Fish to 60 pounds are going for live feels. Some nice sea bass are coming from the ocean wrecks, though that season also closes Dec. 31. Trout and puppy drum are biting in Lynnhaven and Rudee inlets. Offshore charters are scoring with tuna, wahoo and albacore when weather … [Read more...]

In The Christmas Spirit

December 20, 2018 by Jim Brewer

It was December 24, 1956. I had waited until the afternoon of Christmas Eve to begin my shopping spree. I had $10 saved up from my paper route and Mama Ida kicked in an extra five dollars so I could buy a present for everyone on my list. As I walked downtown, it was spitting snow. The lamp posts were adorned with Christmas lights and greenery and there was a Lionel train and a miniature town … [Read more...]
