Deer Nuggets

January 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman T. Shifflett   (Ed. Note: Many are now fortunate to have a little venison in the freezer right now. Below is a reprint from an article by Sherman Shifflett on a great way to prepare venison.)   Any part of the deer can be used for Deer Nuggets, but I always use the back-strap. This recipe is for one loin. Marinate the loin in tomato juice overnight in the … [Read more...]

Buzzards, Buzzards, Everywhere.

January 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I heard the crows squawking last week and figured there was a hawk someplace close by. My three crows hate hawks. But high in the back tree were four buzzards. The crows continued fussing and eventually, the buzzards flew off, heading for a gut pile I suppose. It’s been a really good year for buzzards. There have been lots and lots of deer carcasses piled up beside the highways. And buzzards do … [Read more...]

Tired of All the Rain?

January 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

A fellow died and found himself standing in the long line to judgement. As he stood there, he noticed that those marching to the right went through the Pearly Gates into Heaven, while those heading left went to Satan, who threw them into the fiery pit. But every now and then, the devil would toss one aside into a small pile. Curious, the man strolled over to Satan and asked: “Excuse me, Mr. … [Read more...]

Eating Out – At Sam’s?

January 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Face it. Eating out at Sam’s Club may not offer the best in ambience, and it’s self- serve, but the food there is pretty good. Their hot dogs are big, fat Nathan’s franks. The condiments leave a little to be desired, but the dogs are wonderful and cheap as dirt. Their salads and the ice cream are also good, and if you order a slice of pizza, they give you two. I guess Sam’s figures the longer they … [Read more...]

Get Your Buddy

January 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Capt. Steve Chaconas   If you don’t own any Silver Buddy lures, get some! They allow you to fish any depth with a lot of vibration for little movement. I use ½ ounce and ¾ ounce sizes. Silver is best for days with some sun and moderately clear water. Gold otherwise. Use 10-pound test Gamma Edge fluorocarbon on a Quantum Vapor casting reel. The rod is a medium action 7’ graphite rod, … [Read more...]

Officially! It’s the Off Season

January 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Well … we have officially entered our off-season. Saltwater fishing opportunities are very limited in January and February. Only the most hardcore anglers can deal with the frigid weather. The best news off the water this week was that the tautog action is picking up on inshore structures. Dr. Ken Neill put the Healthy Grin over some nice fish Saturday. Some stripers have been marked 15 … [Read more...]

Madras!

January 10, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Boomers were all about clothing and style. Bottle green was a hot color one fall and burgundy, the next. Bass Weejuns were the shoes of choice. Anything else was a cheap imitation. Then, in 1962, a fabric called madras was hotter than hot. That Christmas, the only thing I asked for was a madras shirt. Madras was fairly pricey. I believe a long sleeve madras shirt was about $10, the equivalent … [Read more...]

Creasy Greens, Coming Soon

January 10, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I planted some creasy green seeds last spring and they mostly sat in the finely tilled soil and sulked. Nancy had received a big pack of seeds from her cousin, Billy, and I spread the extras at the top end of my garden where not much grows anyway. Not enough sun. I also remember scattering them just about the time we had a little dry spell, so they didn’t do anything. But I didn’t … [Read more...]

The Water Tree

January 10, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I have a water tree in my backyard. A what? Yes, a water tree. Near the top of one of my 60-year old silver maples is a large, broken-off limb, one that has a scooped-out bowl built in. It collects water like a wooden salad bowl and the birds love it. I first noticed the unique limb last summer. I was watching a blue jay and noticed he flew to that spot and was dipping his bill like he … [Read more...]

2019 TRENDS IN LIGHTING FIXTURE & SHADE COLOR

January 10, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer “Blue and green remain popular in their own right, but when combined together in Celadon, the two create a soft, calming shade.” I wish I could say I wrote that sentence, however, this was written in the Furniture Lighting Decor magazine. The shade of Celadon is quite lovely and reminds me of colors of the Pacific Ocean surrounding Hawaii. It is such a relaxed color, and some … [Read more...]
