Another Fun Round at Heritage Oaks

August 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Last week, I was finally able to talk my regular golf buddies into a round at Harrisonburg’s Heritage Oaks. After our round, both Kevin and Greg were left admiring the fun and friendly course and we all shot good rounds, Heritage Oaks, about 65 minutes from Charlottesville, is owned and operated by the City of Harrisonburg. The course is player friendly with wide fairways and large … [Read more...]

Golden(ahchoo)rod

August 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Many of those beautiful golden plants we see now along our roads are in the goldenrod (Soilidago) family. That means coughing and sneezing, right? No, that’s incorrect. There is a misconception that goldenrod is a prime cause for hay fever, but it’s not goldenrod. It’s ragweed which is the real culprit. Goldenrod and ragweed bloom at about the same time. But ragweed pollen is blown … [Read more...]

French Dips at Home

August 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

One of my favorite sandwiches when we go out to eat is the French Dip, basically a thinly shaved roast beef sandwich with melted Swiss cheese, grilled onions on a French roll (baguette) and served with a rich dipping sauce. The old Sloan’s Restaurant made the best ever and Timberwood Grill now makes a very good French Dip. I was thinking about going to Timberwood and ordering just such a … [Read more...]

Guadalajara: Consistently Good

August 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I was really craving a fat Italian Sausage sandwich loaded with spicy sausage, hot peppers, mushrooms and onions. Afterall, I haven’t had a severe case of heartburn in more than a month, but I made the mistake of asking Nancy what she wanted if we went out. “Mexican”, she said. “Guadalajara”, she said, but I’m not so sure that it was the Margaritas she was more interested in than the … [Read more...]

Late Summer Flounder

August 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Some nice flounder limits were brought in this week. Jigged buck tails are producing, but drifting with live bait has enticed the larger fish. The hot spots are along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and near the Cell. There are some keeper fish being caught inside local inlets as well. Captain Craig Paige, Paige II Charters landed some nice ones(see above pic) on his last … [Read more...]

The West Virginia State Fair

August 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Special places. Special memories. For me, one such place was the West Virginia State Fair. My parents took me as a child. I later took my children and then my grandchildren. You never tire of a State Fair and West Virginia’s showcase in Fairleigh, WV was always special. In the summer of 1956, I was still getting used to small town life in Lewisburg, population 2,000, after moving … [Read more...]

Rub It On with Sauer’s

August 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I’m a sucker for rubs. I have a cabinet full. Each time I walk down the spice aisle at the grocery store, I stop and inspect – forever seeking that perfect rub for my various meat dishes. After much trial and lot of error, I have arrived at the conclusion that Sauer’s makes the best rubs in the business. The C. F. Sauer Company is local, with headquarters in Richmond. Founded in 1887, they’ve … [Read more...]

Project Perry: A Parrot Sanctuary

August 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Well-meaning humans often buy pets without realizing the amount of care and attention that will be required. Birds and parrots, in fact, can be more labor intensive than dogs and cats. They require special treatment. Birds can also be loud and messy.  Therefore, when people purchase birds from exotic pet stores without knowing what’s required, they will often mistreat the birds or give them up for … [Read more...]

Cherry Tomatoes: Better Late Than Never

August 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I have four healthy cherry tomato vines and fully anticipated I would be plucking the tender beauties throughout the summer for garden salads. But the cherry tomatoes had other ideas. I have had very few to date, but in the next few weeks I will have them in spades. The vines are dragging the ground, they are so loaded. I don’t know why the cherry and grape tomatoes wait until so late … [Read more...]
