New Archery Record for Blue Catfish

September 19, 2019 by Jim Brewer

On June 29, Lindy Rowles drew back his bow and sent an arrow towards a submerged target – a 52 ½ pound blue catfish and he managed to pull it in. The Game Department just certified the big cat as a state record for bow fishing. But this cat was just a baby as far as blue catfish are concerned. The overall record weighed an astonishing 143 pounds, boated by Nick Anderson in Buggs Island … [Read more...]

A Really Roasted Pig

September 19, 2019 by Jim Brewer

It was the Fourth of July. Why not roast a pig? Never mind that I had never cooked a whole pig before nor did I even have a pig cooker, but I suggested the idea to my friend John Savides and he agreed. The problem with having friends like John is that they will agree to most anything. “Wanna go sky diving without a chute?” “Sure,” John would say. “Sounds like fun.” So I bought a … [Read more...]

Time To Fish

September 19, 2019 by Jim Brewer

It’s here. The best time of all to go fishing. This Wednesday, the nighttime temperature dipped into to the 50’s and it might get in the 40’s on Thursday evening. When that happens, fish instinctively understand that it’s time to feed, to put on as much weight as possible before winter arrives. So it’s time. One of the best places in all of Virginia to fish in the fall is at Lake Orange. This … [Read more...]

The Rathskeller at Chapel Hill

September 12, 2019 by Jim Brewer

A Chapel Hill legend died in 2007 – The Rams Head Rathskeller, fondly referred to as “The Rat.” The Rathskeller was a 4,800 square foot restaurant located beneath Franklin Street, Carolina’s version of The Corner at UVA. To access The Rat, you walked down steep concrete stairs off Franklin Street through a place called Amber Alley. At the bottom, you waited and waited and waited. … [Read more...]

Dove Outlook

September 12, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By VDGIF   Dove season is underway, offering lots of exciting shooting opportunities in the coming months. Below is the Game Department’s assessment. The mourning dove is one of the most abundant bird species in North America and dove populations have been stable for the past 10 years. Population estimates are derived from leg-banding studies and breeding bird surveys … [Read more...]

Bobby Jones Golf Course

September 12, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I had a chance to play 9 holes of golf with my son Jimmie on our recent jaunt to Atlanta. Jimmie wanted to try the newly re-opened public course, the Bobby Jones Course, not far from his house. The 9-hole layout had been completely renovated “It was an 18-hole course, but they dug up the entire layout and made it a reversible 9-hole course,” Jimmie explained. The city of Atlanta … [Read more...]

I Don’t Like Spiders and Snakes

September 12, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Marilyn Norford   I don't like spiders and snakes. That’s pretty much my mantra, and that of most of my friends of the feminine persuasion. That being said, one of the most convenient features of my house is the laundry room. It is good-sized and in addition to housing a convenient, deep laundry sink and the obligatory washer and dryer, there are wonderful enclosed … [Read more...]

Lexington BBQ

September 12, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Traveling from Charlottesville to Atlanta, we managed to find ourselves on I-85 Business, not the best route, but at least heading in the right direction. In Lexington, NC, we passed right beside Lexington Barbeque. We didn’t have time to stop, but I have enjoyed many platters of chopped Lexington BBQ in my time. Lexington is Hallowed Ground for those who love barbeque as God Intended – … [Read more...]

Bathroom Lighting Tips

September 12, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   We want to look our best any time of day when we look in our bathroom mirror. Bathrooms have several functions but often, lighting is treated as an afterthought. Often (especially if your bathroom has a window) your light fixtures appear to be brighter during daylight hours. What about at night? What you may have thought as plenty of light during the day has now become … [Read more...]

Lots of Virginia Wineries

September 12, 2019 by Jim Brewer

In my travels to Atlanta last week, I counted 6 vineyards and wineries before I got to Amherst, and I may have missed one or two. Seemingly, no matter which road you get on in Virginia, there will be a vineyard every 20 miles. At last count, there were over 250 registered vineyards and wineries in our Commonwealth. “They” say that Virginia produces good wines, “They” being the ones … [Read more...]
