Plan A Trip

November 22, 2019 by Jim Brewer

If you’ve never been to Hawaii, you simply must put this trip at the very top of your bucket list. With two island cruises behind me, there is no other place I’d rather go. And if you are fortunate enough to visit the islands, which would you choose? The elegant beaches of Waikiki on Oahu?  The sea turtles and rain forests of Maui?  The black sandy beaches and botanical gardens of the … [Read more...]

Hawaii Bound

November 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

When you get this week’s edition of CvilleBuzz, Nancy and I will be headed for Hawaii. Yep, we’re going again. Hawaii is like an addictive drug in that once you’ve been, you’re immediately planning another trip. On this earth, there is no beauty to rival the islands of Hawaii, and we’ll be visiting most all the islands. We are taking the same Norwegian Cruise Lines Pride of America … [Read more...]

The Apartment

November 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

February 1, 1967 was an exciting day. I had packed my Camaro convertible with a few pots and pans, some linens, my guitar and stereo and headed to Charlottesville, my new home. It was a beautiful day, in the low 80’s and I put the top down on my drive over. This Virginia is a special kind of place, I thought. Two weeks later it snowed 16-inches, but on that first day of February, all was … [Read more...]

Whitey The Goldfish

November 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Most goldfish, I suppose, are gold. That’s how they got their names, but we have a goldfish who apparently wasn’t happy with his birth-color and has decided to turn white. We call him (ta-dah) Whitey. Whitey and his seven friends are rescue goldfish. Let me explain. About three years ago, I went on an early spring crappie fishing trip to Lake Orange and stopped at a bait shop … [Read more...]

Delicious Turkey Tenderloin

November 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I don’t know why I bought a turkey tenderloin. I had no earthly idea how I would fix it, but it looked good, I knew it was healthy and it was under ten bucks, so I bought it. Maybe I should say “them” because there are always two turkey loins to a pack. You don’t often see turkey tenderloins in the grocery stores -  those cuts from the bottom of a turkey breast – the tender part of … [Read more...]

Affresh for Ceramic Stove Tops

November 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Ceramic stove tops don’t like it when you tip over a glass bottle of olive oil on the edge of the stove top. They crack right down the middle and you have to buy a new stovetop. Happened to me a few weeks ago and now I keep a plastic bottle of olive oil handy – not glass. When Doug’s Maytag delivered my new ceramic stove top. I asked about cleaning, as this has been a genuine pain, … [Read more...]

Wahoo-Wa!

November 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Thanks to a couple of warm water eddies that have spun off the Gulfstream, Virginia has enjoyed some outstanding late season blue water action. The headliner is the large number of wahoo,  very large wahoo, with several fish topping the 100 pound mark. In addition to the Wahoo, lots yellowfin tuna, some albacore tuna, dolphin and a few billfish are being caught. Speckled trout fishing … [Read more...]

Texas Roadhouse – Amazing

November 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

We had tried the Texas Roadhouse before. It was really loud and noisy, but I thought their food and prices were good. Nancy had a problem when our server didn’t clean off the table after we finished and we hadn’t been back. Last week, in the mood for a steak but not a fancy restaurant, my bride of 51 years said, “Let’s try that loud place again.” And so we did, and I will say right … [Read more...]

A VSGA Card For Christmas

November 14, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Guess what? Christmas is right around the corner and here’s a suggestion for that hard to buy for golfer on your list. Give him or her a 2020 VSGA VIP Card. The VIP cards are $65 and allow the card holder to play at any of over 200 courses in Virginia and even West Virginia for basically the cost of a golf cart rental. My Golf Amigos and I have the cards and I bet I personally … [Read more...]

My Happy Place

November 7, 2019 by Jim Brewer

My happy place? It’s on a dock, any dock or pier with water nearby. I can spend hours and hours on a dock and it’s as if time stand still. I suppose it all goes back to my early experiences as a ten-year-old boy on Uncle’s Sidney’s pier on Bogue Sound, across from Atlantic Beach. Uncle Sidney had built the pier by himself, no easy task for a man with a wooden leg. He had lost his … [Read more...]
