My daughter Laura gave me The Big Red Pot several years ago, but I don’t use it often enough, primarily because it weighs a ton and digging it out from beneath the cabinet is a chore. But I was in the mood for beef stew and nothing cooks stew like my Big Red Pot. The pot is a Tramontina Enameled Cast Iron 6.5 Quart Round Dutch Oven. I have found that cast iron cookware ensures even … [Read more...]
Bluebird Happenings
For the first time in recent memory, I have two pairs of bluebirds in my yard. They seemingly get along fine – now. But come spring and nesting time, the feathers will fly. One of the pairs – I think the birds that raised a brood in my yard last summer – inspects the bluebird house on the fence every single day. The male will fly to the hole, peek in, occasionally go inside and turn … [Read more...]
LouAna – Simply The Best
We were out of town and I had cooking duties and needed some vegetable oil. But I didn’t need much, certainly not a gallon. In the cooking oil section at the top of the shelf, I saw a small 16-oz. bottle of LouAna Vegetable Oil. Mom used to use that oil in our house years ago, so I bought the small jar. As I poured a bit in the frying pan, I noticed and remembered that the oil is … [Read more...]
Big Bucks Don’t Just Happen
By Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III There are three requirements for a buck to become the trophy that most hunters dream about. Number one is food, number two is age and number three is genetics and in just that order. No buck can ever achieve his potential, whatever it might be, without access to an almost unlimited amount of highly nutritious food. No buck can ever achieve his … [Read more...]
Shallow Water Monsters
Every year about this time, my friend Capt. Allen Caine sends pictures and accounts of some of the best fishing in the world. While Allen and his clients are battling 40 pound redfish on fly rods in balmy 70-degree Louisiana weather, we’re up here dodging snowstorms. It doesn’t seem fair. I can’t imagine a more exciting adventure than to sight fish in shallow water with Capt. Allen. … [Read more...]

Bigger Stripers
Large rockfish are moving out of bay tributaries and into the Bay. Look for them on the Eastern side of the Bay. Anglers are drifting or slow trolling eels near the Plantation Light and along Cape Charles. Mann’s Stretch 25’s and tandem rigs are also effective. School-sized rockfish are available for anglers casting along the bridge pilings and the artificial islands of the … [Read more...]
“They’re Grrrrrreat!”
I don’t eat a lot of cereal. I’m more of a sausage and egg kinda-guy, but I used to eat a lot of cereal. All Boomer kids did. After all, if you didn’t eat cereal how were you going to get any of those neat prizes? I read that Cracker Jacks recently discontinued putting premiums in their boxes, signaling the end of an era, an era of reaching to the very bottom of a new box of cereal to … [Read more...]
A Cedar Waxwing Visit
We had an unexpected Cedar Waxwing visit over the Thanksgiving holidays. We heard a distinct “thump” at the dining room window, and when my son-in-law, Brent, went out to investigate, he found a small, stunned cedar waxwing under concussion protocol. He held the small fellow in his hand for several minutes until it regained its senses and then flew up to the treetops to connect with his … [Read more...]
Backstrap for the Family
By Sherman Shifflett Sometimes I think that deer have calendars for the different hunting seasons. During bow season, I saw lots of deer where I hunt on a farm near Cuckoo, in Louisa County. Cuckoo Tavern is where Jack Jouett took off to ride a horse 40 some miles to Monticello to warn Jefferson that the British were coming. Because Brother Ed was having some health issues, I spent a … [Read more...]
