Remembering the Ferrum Dawgs

October 7, 2021 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett Ferrum Junior College football coach, Hank Norton, often referred to his football players as "Dawgs." For some of the guys on the team, that nickname was well deserved. One time a player was injured during a scrimmage, and coach Norton turned to a manager and directed him to "Drag that 'dawg' off the field." Coach Norton had a pet dog, Chief, and I don't recall a single … [Read more...]

Kroger’s Rotisserie Chicken

October 7, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I’ve been buying Sam’s Rotisserie Chicken for years. They were one of the first stores to come out with them and keep them rotating on a spit throughout the day, so you felt like they were never old and dried out. Plus, they were about five bucks, the cheapest on the market. This past week I needed a rotisserie chicken for a quick pot pie I was making and didn’t have time to go to Sam’s. I was … [Read more...]

Fall Is in the Air!

October 7, 2021 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   Whew! I thought fall would not arrive soon enough. I have tired of watering my flowers due to lack of rain and temperatures in the 90’s and as much as I love summer, I’ve been waiting for fall and finally it’s here! The colors of autumn always excite me, and the smell of pumpkin pie and apple cider make me happy, and once again we can enjoy our fire pit in the back yard. … [Read more...]

Year-round Tomatoes? I Wish

October 7, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I had a decent garden this year, though the mid-summer drought played hell with several of my plantings, like squash. But production was decent – especially with my completely enclosed cage which kept squirrels and rabbits at bay. Overall, we had a good year for tomatoes. Nancy has a small, above-ground enclosed cage for her garden and she always gets a head start since the ground … [Read more...]

The Spaniards are Still Biting

October 7, 2021 by Jim Brewer

The Spanish mackerel bite shows no signs of letting up. If anything, the fish are bigger and there are more of them as witnessed by the above catch aboard Ocean Pearl Charters. Alex Gallardo Perez weighed a 5-11. and a 4-8 Spanish. Jack Limroth had a 7-0 and a 4-14. Nice fish! As October rolls in, the big red drum head out to sea. There are large schools seen surfacing now as they … [Read more...]

Think Small in the Fall

October 7, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Fall is here, and that means think “small”. Small as in smallmouth bass. Fall is the perfect time to catch the most dynamic freshwater fish of all. Smallies are active, they’re in fishable waters, not deep, and they are hungry; and Virginia is blessed with great smallmouth rivers, both large and small. With shorter days and cooler nights, temperatures are perfect, both in the air and in the water, … [Read more...]

Fall on the Outer Banks

September 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I can think of no better place to welcome in the cool, clear mornings of fall than on the Outer Banks of North Carolina – one of the world’s great places. My first visit to Nags Head on the Outer Banks left me unimpressed. I was in college at the time and it seemed like a dull place to be. Nothing much happening, just a laid-back cluster of cottages bordering the ocean and the single … [Read more...]

Outta’ Sight Drum Fishing

September 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Our boat was not ten minutes from the dock before Capt. Reece Stecher saw them. “Get your rod ready, there they are,” Reece shouted from the tower. “I saw them too, an angry mob of red drum. They had trapped a hapless school of mullet on a shoal and were laying waste to any and everything that moved. My Johnson Spoon didn’t make it five feet and it was, “Fish … [Read more...]

The Dance of the Sea Oats

September 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

They live in clusters atop the dunes and stretch westward towards the sun. They dance in rhythm to the music of the breezes throughout the day and night. They are sea oats, creatures of the beach. They build the dunes and guard the shores. The stately grasses are tough. They can sink their roots in fragile sand and survive the big blows out of the northeast and the driving gales of … [Read more...]

Sunrise, Sunset

September 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer I’m passionate about many things and two are sunrises and sunsets.  I enjoy them the most on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  As I write this, I feel refreshed and renewed from four great days at the beach with my favorite person.  I rise early to greet the sun.  There are other “early birds” on the beach and some on decks waiting, … [Read more...]
