Red Drum Action Heating Up

April 15, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The Plantz family from Charlottesville had an exciting trip with Capt. Reese Stecher of BeachBumFishing.com at Oregon Inlet.  Site casting to vast schools of red drum, the family scored with fish after fish. Reese said there are plenty of stripers in the sound, but that there are too many drum around to mess with the stripers. He also said that the speckled trout are showing up now, but they … [Read more...]

The Walleye of a Lifetime

April 15, 2022 by Jim Brewer

By Rick Perry, the Assistant to Executive Director for Law Enforcement at DWR. His goal was to catch a Virginia walleye, and he was shocked at what happened! This last Thursday, March 3, I caught the fish of a lifetime in the New River. I had always wanted to catch a walleye, but didn’t really want to go to Canada to catch one. Last September I was working with CPO Wes Billings when … [Read more...]

Calling Century Link

April 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

“Please hold. An operator will be with you shortly!” Yeah, right. And those are friendly Indians, General Custer. Next to an IRS audit, the thing I hate worse in life is having to call a utility company. I had to make such a call last week to shut off phone service as my business was changing locations. The call was to Century Link, a pillar of customer service. “If … [Read more...]

Anaheim Peppers Revisited

April 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Last summer, as I was planting the last row of my small vegetable garden space, one of the pepper plants I had put in went belly-up. With some prime space now available in that row, I found a decent looking pepper plant at the Corner Store Nursery. The pot label said, “Anaheim Pepper” and was listed as a hot, chili pepper. I’m not crazy about hot peppers, but several in my family are, so … [Read more...]

Unexpected Company

April 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Some unexpected visitors appeared in our back yard this week – about 25 or 30 of them and they went skinny dipping in our goldfish pond. It was a large flock of Cedar Waxwings and what beauties! I have been seeing Cedar Waxwings in the last few years, but only passing through. I see them along about this time of year and again in mid-fall. I suppose they migrate through this … [Read more...]

Easy Spaghetti Pie

April 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

When we were counselors for the youth group at our church, we often served Sunday night dinner for the kids. Of all the meals, they overwhelmingly preferred Sloppy Joe’s and Spaghetti Pie. Spaghetti Pie may be the ultimate comfort food. It’s tasty, easy to prepare, and everybody loves it – especially kids. There are dozens of recipes for the pie, but as always, I go for the … [Read more...]

A Bird’s Eye View

April 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I hung the weird-looking Creature of the Black Lagoon’s Bird House on a shepherd’s crook in one of Nancy’s Garden beds a couple weeks back. As I described, the house is constructed of moss and clay and looks like it was drained from the swamp. But I hung it anyway. Because of the way the crook was situated, the hole to the nest pointed to the side, not to the front. I wondered if … [Read more...]

“Lettuce” Entertain You

April 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Nancy sent me to the store with a grocery list for the ingredients she needed for the meal she was preparing. With my wife, it’s never “butter, eggs and sugar” It’s more like “Sun Dried Kumquats, Gluten Free Squash Flour and Pickled Toad’s Feet.” For the life of me, I can never remember which aisle the Toad’s Feet are on. But along with her list of exotic ingredients, she needed a … [Read more...]

Sam’s Hot Dogs

April 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

When I want a Sam’s Hot Dog fix, I have to go out of town. With ten million restaurants in Charlottesville, you’d think we’d have one Sam’s Hot Dog Stand, but we don’t. Crozet, Waynesboro, or Harrisonburg are our three closesst options. In my opinion, Sam’s is one of the best hot dog vendors anywhere, right up there with Cap’n Franks on the Outer Banks. Their hot dogs are simply … [Read more...]

The Big Drum Have Arrived

April 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The big news on the Virginia saltwater scene is that large red drum have arrived on the shoals near Fisherman’s Island. Dr. Ken Neill, Stan Simmerman and David Brabrand made a run over and caught a shark, had two drag screamers, and pulled the hook on one. But David did manage to tag and released their first bull red of the season. Good puppy drum action continues in Virginia Beach … [Read more...]
