Pork Tenderloin Plain and Simple

January 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The pork tenderloin is the most tender of all cuts. It is the filet mignon of pork. Yet, it is one of the most value-priced cuts of meat there is. There is absolutely no waste, it’s lean and nutritious and it’s very inexpensive, about $5 a pound. But I rarely buy it. For some reason, I have been unable to cook and serve pork tenderloin that I considered a knockout dish. I have tried all sorts … [Read more...]

Snow is Good

January 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Snow is a good thing – not only for all the school children who relish a few extra days off to break out their sleds and toboggans, but it is an essential element in growing flowers and vegetables. We “backyard farmers” need snow to turn out a successful harvest come summer and fall. The recent snow will blanket our gardens and when it melts – we assume it will melt eventually – our small plots … [Read more...]

Calling All Blue Jays

January 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

They know the drill. When they see me heading out to the shed in the back yard each morning, my small flock of blue jays begins to spread the word. With a piercing, hawk-like shriek, one blue jay lets the others know that dinner is on. They’ll soon be eating peanuts. Blue jays are noisy birds, perhaps the most vocal of all my backyard songbirds. They have five distinct calls and use … [Read more...]

My Pillow.Com

January 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

“Hi, I’m Mike Lindell, the Pillow Guy.” Who doesn’t know Mike Lindell? He’s on TV every 15 minutes hawking his sheets and pillows, mattress toppers, robes… and slippers. Yes, slippers. “I guarantee these will be the most comfortable slippers you’ve ever owned,” Mike promises. And he’s right! I now have a pair of his slippers and they really are the most comfortable slippers I’ve ever … [Read more...]

Ice Fishing

January 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

One day, a rather inebriated ice fisherman drilled a hole in the ice. He peered into the hole and a loud voice said, "There are no fish down there." He walked several yards away and drilled another hole and peered into the hole and again the voice said, "There are no fish down there." He then walked about 50 yards away and drilled another hole and again the voice said, "There are … [Read more...]

Pyro Gloves

December 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I am a pyromaniac. I go to their meetings. “My name is Jim and I like to poke around in fires and watch things burn.” If there is a campfire around, I am attracted it to it like a moth to a glowing candle. Fires, especially outdoor campfires, and fire pits are fascinating. I drive my wife, Nancy, crazy because I can’t leave a fire alone. I am forever adding more logs and poking … [Read more...]

Do Whitetail Fawns Breed?

December 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III   When I wrote my book, The Deer of North America, in 1978, I had already been studying deer for 39 years and had taken thousands of photographs of them.  I have over 17,000 reference books in my personal library and I read 486 books and biological reports on deer in order make my own book as complete as possible.  One of the reports, in the Journal … [Read more...]

December 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

The year was 1920,"One hundred-and one years ago." What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1920: - The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. - Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only. - Only 14 percent of homes had a bathtub. - Only 8 percent of homes had a telephone. - The average US wage in 1919 was 22 cents per hour. - The average US … [Read more...]

Piebald Deer

December 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Marilynn Norford in Allegheny County, NC was able to capture this shot of a rare “piebald” deer. Here is her account: “I'm excited to share this one, and yes, it was exciting to photograph because it's such a rare sight and some people will never get to see something like this!  So, yay me, (even if I haven't got my photo of a bear), yet.......ha. I had been hoping to get a shot like this … [Read more...]

Grounded

December 30, 2021 by Jim Brewer

A few weeks ago, three snowbirds appeared beneath my feeder. That was a sign for me to begin scattering more seed on the ground in addition to keeping my feeders filled. Many birds in our yards are ground feeders, and it seems unfair for them to have to scrounge for bits of food and seed dislodged from the feeders. So, I feed them directly on the ground. How much you feed them will determine … [Read more...]
