(Ed: Note: My computer had a bad hair day last week and wouldn't connect to CvilleBuzz, so it didn't go out. Here's hoping it makes it to your in-box this week. Thx Jim) Well, I mowed my onions last week. Not grass, onions. I may have my best crop ever. My yard grows onions so well that I am thinking of turning it into a wild onion farm. I understand there … [Read more...]

Residential Lighting Design: Part 2
Our customers most often think they know the style of lighting they want. However, when they come into our showroom that all changes. Selecting lighting can be challenging and sometimes overwhelming. Customers who are building often decide on flooring, counter tops, plumbing, appliances, paint colors and save lighting for last. When this happens, panic sets in. But no fear, we’re here to … [Read more...]
Betty Crocker Muffin Tops
One of the classic Seinfeld episodes was about muffin tops. Elaine suggested to a friend that somebody should sell muffin tops, not the whole muffins, because the tops were the best part. Her friend stole her idea, opened a muffin top store and Newman ended up eating thousands of leftover muffin bottoms. It was one of my favorite episodes. Recently, I saw that Betty Crocker had a … [Read more...]
Mountain Mint
Nancy wanted some Mountain Mint, to plant next to our goldfish/frog pond. The aromatic plant is valued because of its ability to attract butterflies, bees, wasps, and flies. Her pond advisor suggested the plants would provide cover for our frogs and a source of food. So, off I went in search of Pycnanthemum, better known as Mountain Mint. No one in town had any, but my favorite … [Read more...]
The Best Hot Dog Chili
All hot dogs are good, but really great hot dogs have great chili. The best hot dog chili I have ever had is made at Jim’s Drive-In in Lewisburg, WV. They have been making their chili from the same exact recipe for over 75 years. It’s so good, that I – among many – will drive 50 miles out of the way just to get a couple of Jim’s Drive-In Hot Dogs. I have made homemade hot dog chili in … [Read more...]
Red Drum Action Heating Up
The Plantz family from Charlottesville had an exciting trip with Capt. Reese Stecher of BeachBumFishing.com at Oregon Inlet. Site casting to vast schools of red drum, the family scored with fish after fish. Reese said there are plenty of stripers in the sound, but that there are too many drum around to mess with the stripers. He also said that the speckled trout are showing up now, but they … [Read more...]
The Walleye of a Lifetime
By Rick Perry, the Assistant to Executive Director for Law Enforcement at DWR. His goal was to catch a Virginia walleye, and he was shocked at what happened! This last Thursday, March 3, I caught the fish of a lifetime in the New River. I had always wanted to catch a walleye, but didn’t really want to go to Canada to catch one. Last September I was working with CPO Wes Billings when … [Read more...]
Calling Century Link
“Please hold. An operator will be with you shortly!” Yeah, right. And those are friendly Indians, General Custer. Next to an IRS audit, the thing I hate worse in life is having to call a utility company. I had to make such a call last week to shut off phone service as my business was changing locations. The call was to Century Link, a pillar of customer service. “If … [Read more...]
Anaheim Peppers Revisited
Last summer, as I was planting the last row of my small vegetable garden space, one of the pepper plants I had put in went belly-up. With some prime space now available in that row, I found a decent looking pepper plant at the Corner Store Nursery. The pot label said, “Anaheim Pepper” and was listed as a hot, chili pepper. I’m not crazy about hot peppers, but several in my family are, so … [Read more...]
